Protestantism is usually thought of as rejecting the figure of Mary as a collaborator in Christ's redemption. In Luther's commentary on the Magnificat (1521), we can see that this doctrine would continue to evolve throughout his life, and would not always be free of apparent ambiguities. Luther extolled the figure of Mary, but at the same time he could not avoid reinterpreting her according to the presuppositions of the doctrine of justification and his theology of the Cross, and he understands the figure of Mary as a Mater dolorosa, as one who participates in a special way in the sorrow of her Son. Her union with the Saviour means she shares his pain. In these lines, we intend to look at the main points proposed by the German reformer in his new perspective on Mariology, and the possible influence of this change in spirituality on painting, for example, in The Crucifixion (1532) by Luther's personal friend Lucas Cranach the Elder, and we propose a comparison with The Lamentation of Christ (1502), painted before the Reformation.

    Resumen
This paper investigates digital discursive practices of hostility against women in UK politics through quantitative and qualitative analysis of a corpus of Twitter data retrieved across the 3 weeks preceding the UK General Elections in December 2019. A mixed-methods approach was designed. First, we used quantitative semantic analysis to compare the large datasets of tweets about female and male MPs, with a view to detecting possible gendered patterns. We then triangulated our quantitative findings with an in-depth critical discursive analysis of the tweets mentioning female MPs. Rather than showing gendered patterns across the board, the results from the quantitative analysis brought out large inter-individual differences. Some female MPs received comments containing more lexis related to appearance, sexual history and violence, as well as more emotional or extreme language. Critical analysis of the hostile and abusive messages targeting women reveals them to be deeply embedded in a social perception of women's political activity as breaching the rules of gender performativity.

When the new Scottish Parliament was established through the Scotland Act of 1998, various innovative steps were taken to guarantee greater public participation in political processes. One of these measures, the Scottish e-petitioning system, provides a vehicle for interested citizens to petition the parliament directly on matters of public interest. This article examines all the e-petitions submitted since September 2011 in the area of Justice and Law, establishing how petitioners convey their own motivation for taking this step, and how Scottish justice is represented. Analysis of these petitions shows citizens engaging proactively with legal issues, and probes into citizens' conceptualizations of law and justice both in their current reality and as projections of how they could or should be. It also explores the association between legal and national consciousness, and the way in which citizens adopt an increasingly transnational approach to framing legal issues. The petitions thus reveal both active concern to achieve justice in highly specific individual matters, and a more theoretical concern with the specific status of Scottish justice, portrayed as lagging behind the rest of the United Kingdom in various respects.

    Resumen
Natural disasters and pandemics bring new risks and dangers to women and their children. In particular, various factors stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, such as economic instability, additional stress and increased control over victims led to an increase in both prevalence and severity of intimate partner violence. Based on the findings of a study conducted by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), this article examines the main challenges during the first months of the COVID-19 crisis (March¿September 2020) and analyses institutional responses to facilitate access to support services for victims. Relying on a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, the study highlights the role of European Union (EU) Member States in improving long-term responses to gender-based violence in times of crises. The study also gives particular attention to emerging promising practices and holistic approaches towards the gender-based violence crisis stemming from the pandemic, describing selected examples of initiatives adopted across the EU and identifying main areas of improvement.

Christianity is sometimes considered as guilty of the ecological miscare throughout history. The words `economy¿, `ecology¿ and `ecumenism¿ come from the same word (oikos ¿ house) and remain very close in their respective developments. But Welt-ethos must be preceded by a Welt-logos and by an Um-welt-logos, that means that Nature has her own voice in our relationship with the Planet. This is a counter-intuitive principle in the history of Christianity, whose position has been sometimes ambiguous. An historical approach can help us to understand better these abstract ideas as incarnated in the present moment. This ecumenical and ecological spirituality is lived not only by monks and friars, but also by all believers in Christ, and the theology of creation is an ecumenical meeting-point between all Christians. In this study we will follow here a biblical, historical, ecumenical and comparative methodology, for understanding how was lived this issue in the Christianity, and how must be lived in the future.

Among many other sources, Ratzinger received his formation from the "three great masters" - Augustine, Bonaventure and Thomas Aquinas. While rejecting an unpersonal and essentialist scholasticism, he recognizes the authority of Aquinas - seen through an "Augustinian Thomism" - in anthropology, the doctrine of grace and creation, as well as in the nature of the act of faith and the method of theology. The German theologian tries to make the ontological perspective compatible with the historical-salvific perspective, the personalist perspective with the metaphysical point of view. In the synthesis between faith and reason, philosophy and theology, Ratzinger finds in Aquinas a good model, which is based not only on the order of grace but also on the order of creation.

Recent discourse research has examined the rise of right-wing populism. Yet the predominant focus on political parties and politicians means that we know less about how right-wing identities are performed among ordinary people with different degrees of political engagement. This paper examines reader comments pages in three British newspapers, analysing how participants perform, defend and reinforce their political identities in online fora. It traces how supporters of the far-right United Kingdom Independence Party perform collective identities and enact political antagonisms. The conclusions emphasise how online media particularly propitiate the blending of personal and societal discourses, and suggest that the internal dynamics of affordances such as comments pages propel conflict escalation and heighten antagonism.

In this article, the author continues to apply cognitive reading to oral traditional poetry, addressing the kopla zaharra¿a short improvisational poetic genre from the Basque Country that is now extinct. In order to understand how this genre once functioned, the author draws her experience in working with ayyu¿a living poetic tradition from Morocco, which has a strikingly similar structure. The analysis sets out from the historical evidence showing that the kopla zaharra was indeed once an improvisational genre. She then explains the notions of frames, or topics or themes, and scripts, or possible scenarios manifested at least partly in form of formulaic language, which are triggered by these, to analyze the typical cognitive structure of the kopla zaharra. Her analysis shows that on the cognitive level the kopla zaharra offers a structure similar to the Moroccan ayyu, where the first two lines work to activate a frame and the last two lines generally complete a script. This confirms the conclusion that although ayyu and kopla zaharrak are separated by a wide cultural and linguistic rift, the cognitive mechanisms behind the process of their creation are highly analogous.

    Resumen
This paper proposes the concept of digital mirroring to explore and contextualise post-Arab Spring digital feminism in the Levant within a critical discourse framework. Digital mirroring illustrates the way in which contemporary Arab feminist groups articulate their digital presence orienting toward the vertical dimension of their sociopolitical contexts and toward the horizontal dimension characterised by the digital practices of other feminist movements in the region. We observed this phenomenon through the analysis of a multimodal corpus of Facebook and Instagram posts published by thirty-two institutionalised and non-institutionalised feminist groups in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria between 2011 and 2019. The analysis of the linguistic and the visual strategies of MENA feminist groups is grounded in contemporary sociolinguistic studies on Arabic diglossia and multimodality. Findings reveal the complex interplay of digital self-representation, local resistance, and transregional networking of Levantine women. We argue that a simultaneous analysis of the vertical and the horizontal contextual dimensions of digital mirroring is necessary to comprehend social media discursive strategies and their transregional breadth as a central component of contemporary Arab feminism and emancipatory discourses at large.

In European politics today, the issues of nationalism and populism are attracting considerable research attention. However, most discourse studies have either focused exclusively on far-right politics, or have looked at populism at both extremes of the political spectrum. In this chapter, I approach the discursive representation of the nation and the people from an exploratory, comparative perspective informed by corpus assisted discourse studies, drawing on mixed methodology, and focusing on the politics of Great Britain. My corpus contains six 2017 election manifestos: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats, UKIP, Scottish National Party, and Plaid Cymru. Principled searches are conducted for references to nations, national groups and people/citizens, which are then analysed qualitatively in a contrastive perspective. © 2021 John Benjamins Publishing Company

    Resumen
English medium instruction (EMI) is widespread in European universities. In most such contexts, students and teachers are able to communicate in at least one other language, generally the shared L1. Recent studies in English-speaking countries and postcolonial settings have suggested that attitudes towards L1 use in EMI are changing, and that multilingualism in the classroom is accepted or even positively embraced. However, some studies in expanding circle countries such as Spain and Turkey indicate that this trend is not universal. This paper uses evidence from narrative frames administered to 60 EMI lecturers at 5 universities in northern Spain to investigate their attitudes to L1 use, identify how these intersect with their age, years of experience in EMI, gender and subject area, and shed light on their conceptualisations of EMI and emergent practices. Around half believed that L1 use was not acceptable, while most of the others only allowed the L1 in highly circumscribed conditions (to repair breakdowns in communication, to foster empathy outside the classroom, or to refer to local phenomena). Our evidence reflects the struggle to further the use of English in EMI settings where this language is a relative newcomer.

    Resumen
stoevsky¿s novels are pure philosophy,¿ declared Luigi Pareyson (1918¿1991), an Italian existentialist. He presents a Christian Dostoevsky capable of overcoming the nihilistic onslaught of a post-Christian culture, both in its harshest and ¿weaker¿ and postmodern versions. Nietzsche finds a good antagonist in Dosto-evsky, who, being earlier in time, will be able to overcome Nihilism. Before being a Christian, the Russian novelist had already descended into hell out of nowhere, in his exile in Siberia. He survived this ordeal ¿ which inevitably led him to nowhere ¿ and paradoxically found Jesus Christ. That is why his novels and his ideas can offer a shelter at this turn of the millennium

Ruth Finnegan FBA OBE (1933, Derry, Northern Ireland) took a DPhil in Anthropology at Oxford, then joined the Open University of which she is now an Emeritus Professor. Her publications include Oral Literature in Africa (1970), Oral Poetry (1977), The Hidden Musicians: Music-Making in an English Town (1989), and Why Do We Quote? The Culture and History of Quotation (2011). Ruth Finnegan was interviewed by Sarali Gintsburg (ICS, University of Navarra) and Luis Galvan Moreno (University of Navarra) on the occasion of an online lecture delivered at the Institute for Culture and Society at the University of Navarra. In this trialogue-like interview, Ruth tells about the childhood experiences that were decisive for her interest in orality and storytelling, about her education and training as a Classicist in Oxford, the beginnings of her fieldwork in Africa among the Limba of Sierra Leone, and her recent activity as a novelist. She stresses the importance of voice, of its physical, bodily dimensions, its pitch and cadence; and then affirms the essential role of audience in communication. The discussion then touches upon several features of African languages, classical Arabic and Greek, and authoritative texts of Western culture, from Homer and the Bible to the 19th century novel. Through discussing her childhood memories, her assessment of the development and challenges of anthropology, and her views on the digital transformation of the world, Ruth concludes that the notion of narr

At times of crisis, access to information takes on special importance, and in the Internet age of constant connectedness, this is truer than ever. Over the course of the pandemic, the huge public demand for constantly updated health information has been met with a massive response from official and scientific sources, as well as from the mainstream media. However, it has also generated a vast stream of user-generated digital postings. Such phenomena are often regarded as unhelpful or even dangerous since they unwittingly spread misinformation or make it easier for potentially harmful disinformation to circulate. However, little is known about the dynamics of such forums or how scientific issues are represented there. To address this knowledge gap, this chapter uses a corpus-assisted discourse approach to examine how ¿expert¿ knowledge and other sources of authority are represented and contested in a corpus of 10,880 reader comments responding to Mail Online articles on the development of the COVID-19 vaccine in February¿July 2020. The results show how ¿expert¿ knowledge is increasingly problematized and politicized, while other strategies are used to claim authority. The implications of these findings are discussed in the context of sociological theories, and some tentative solutions are proposed.

    Resumen
In our increasingly digitalized civilization where sharing information and interacting about it is ever more made available to the general public, research into corporate communication practices of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) content on social media is desperately needed. This study makes a contribution to fill this research gap by performing a corpus-based content and multimodal linguistic analysis of the way in which an IBEX 35 energy company, Iberdrola, communicates about its CSR policy on social media. The corpus consists of 438 posts on Twitter and 126 posts on Facebook. The results allow to draw the following conclusions: 1) Iberdrola's information strategy varies from social media channel, where on Twitter the focus is through the environment, sustainability, social investment, stakeholders and arts, and on Facebook the focus is directed at stakeholders, thus motivating them to engage with CSR-related information; 2) there is certainly an interactive strategy, with many elements that characterize digital discourse, such as structures that elicit (positive) emotions, informal language use (like emojis and use of 1st and 2nd person) and other multimodal elements like hashtags and tags, which are all efforts at increasing brand trust, engagement, and admiration; 3) there are some underlying patterns within the informative and the interactive strategy, being that the overall way in which Iberdrola wants to communicate its CSR information is through informal and (positive) emotional language, with an exception of negative emotional language when discussing environmental themes, most probably to avoid accusations of greenwashing.

    Resumen
This article invites the reader to revisit the ancient and universal genre of the lullaby. We start by pointing out that the lullaby has almost never been studied in its natural settings: instead, it is often approached exclusively as a heavily proofread literary text stripped from its context. Further, we focus on tendana, a lullaby from the island of Soqotra. The tendanas used for our analysis were collected from a largely preliterate, non-media-exposed culture and in natural settings. By running a comparison between tendanas and lullabies from a number of other cultures, we conclude that, although there are a number of similarities between them, tendanas also have several unique traits, among them a different sense of safety and danger, only sporadic use of onomatopoetic vocabulary, and an absence of cumulative and counting elements.

In the debate on academic freedom, the Finnis case has been one of the most recent and one of the ones with the most media coverage. The petition launched by a group of students of the University of Oxford to remove John Finnis from teaching has generated numerous reactions in the press and on social networks. Speaking on speeches about speeches, the linguistic study from the polyphony and argumentation in the language focus (Anscombre & Ducrot 1983) seems the most suitable for the analysis of the treatment that the mass media have given to the debate (Bednarek 2006, 2007, Fairclough 1988, Smirnova 2009). In this paper we have analyzed the strategies of (de)legitimization that have been used to quote foreign statements. Secondly, the presence that has been given to each of the actors involved in the debate has been studied.

In this article I continue reading oral traditional poetry from a cognitive perspective. This time I use findings obtained empirically from my previous research on the living short improvisational poetic genre ayyu from Morocco (Gintsburg 2017, 2019a) and turn my attention to kopla zaharrak, another short oral improvisational poetic genre, which once existed in the Basque Country but is now extinct and almost forgotten. In order to better understand how this genre once functioned, I first apply to it the notions of frames, or topics or themes, and scripts, or possible scenarios manifested at least partly in form of formulaic language, which are triggered by them. The analysis reveals that on the cognitive level kopla zaharrak offer a structure similar to the ayyu, where the first two lines work as a frame and the last two lines as a script. In the second part of my research, I compare examples of kopla zaharrak and ayyus and conclude that, despite obvious cultural and linguistic differences, the way both traditions make use of images of the natural world and connect them to human situations has demonstrable similarities.

In the ten years from 2008 onwards the banking sector was constantly in the spotlight. Blame for the financial crisis and concern regarding controversial government bailouts were followed by public outrage about inflated bonuses, money laundering and false reporting. Over this period, banks deployed a range of legitimation strategies to salvage their reputation. This paper proposes a modified typology of legitimation strategies based on previous research (van Leeuwen and Wodak 1999; Vaara, Tienari and Laurila 2006), and examines how these are used by in the "letter to shareholders" published by the chairs of the five main UK-based banks over the ten years following the crisis. The strategies are analysed in terms of their object, target and interdiscursive features, and the particular persuasive roles of narrative and emotion are underlined.

    Resumen
Good governance is a key factor in underpinning the integrity and efficiency of an institution, whether it is a private company or a national or international organisation. The core principles of good governance are now often defined as fairness, accountability, responsibility and transparency. Although these terms are familiar to all those involved in corporate social responsibility/sustainability and business ethics, and are frequently discussed in the European Parliament and European directives, they often pose a challenge to the translator, since obvious equivalents for all of them do not exist in all EU languages. In this paper, I take the example of accountability, and examine the way that it is represented in both Spanish and German in the EUROPARL7 parallel corpus of European Parliament Proceedings, available in the Sketch Engine corpus platform. Accountability in English can be defined as an assurance that individuals or organizations will be evaluated on their performance or behaviour related to something for which they are responsible, or more simply, as being responsible for explaining what you do and able to give a satisfactory account of it to those whom your actions affect. The English term accountability thus differs from responsibility and transparency, although it overlaps with both. However, not all languages allow us to distinguish easily between the concepts they designate. In fact, the majority of Spanish translations of accountability found in EUROPARL7 simply use responsabilidad, while others make reference to rendir cuentas or rendicion de cuentas, and a few actually use transparencia. In German, the picture is less confused, with the closer term Rechenschaftspflicht employed as the usual translation, but an abundance of alternatives such as Verantwortlichkeit and Auskunftspflicht also appear. In my conclusions, I discuss the rationale that may underlie the different choices, point to problems that might arise from poor translations, and suggest reasons we should strive to maintain clear definitions of these key concepts.

This paper analyses letters to shareholders by bank presidents in the ten years after the financial crisis to establish whether apologies for corporate wrongdoing and mismanagement are present, and if not, how these negative aspects are communicated. Apologies and quasi apologies are shown to be part of a wider repertoire of strategies including alignment with those affected, disassociation from negative events, scapegoating of perpetrators, and promises of future good conduct. These findings are discussed in terms of the banks¿ ongoing relationship with shareholders, and their wider reputation management endeavours.

    Resumen
This rapid spread of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) across Europe means that secondary education teachers of subjects like science or history are increasingly required to teach their subjects in English. For some this is a positive impulse to professional development, but in all cases changing the language of instruction poses a challenge, sometimes triggering negative feelings and leading teachers to question their professional identity. After reviewing relevant research, we analyse the impact of a training programme for in-service CLIL teachers on their emotions and identity. Our findings show that the transition to CLIL was a cause of considerable insecurity in this sample, associated with threats to the teachers¿ professional self-confidence and satisfaction. Future training should allow more space for consideration of emotional factors, with a view to helping teachers reshape their professional identity.

On the occasion of the 2017 UK election campaign, Amnesty International conducted a large-scale, sentiment-based analysis of online hate speech against women MPs on Twitter (Dhrodia 2018), identifying the Top 5 most attacked women MPs as Diane Abbott, Joanna Cherry, Emily Thornberry, Jess Phillips and Anna Soubry. Taking Amnesty International's results as a starting point, this paper investigates online misogyny against the Top 5 women MPs, with a specific focus on the video-sharing platform YouTube, whose loosely censored cyberspace is known as a breeding ground for antagonism, impunity and disinhibition (Pihlaja 2014), and, therefore, merits investigation. By collecting and analysing a corpus of YouTube multimodal data we explore, critique and contextualize online misogyny as a techno-social phenomenon applying a Social Media Critical Discourse Studies (SM-CDS) approach (KhosraviNik and Esposito 2018). Mapping a vast array of discursive strategies, this study offers an in-depth analysis on how technology-facilitated gender-based violence contributes to discursively constructing the political arena as a fundamentally male-oriented space, and reinforces stereotypical and sexist representation of women in politics and beyond.

In public controversy after the Brexit referendum, social media played a prominent role. In particular, veteran populist anti-EU campaigner Nigel Farage used Twitter as a powerful weapon to further his cause. This paper compares a corpus of Farage's tweets in 2017-2018 with those by four other prominent British politicians (May, Johnson, Corbyn and Starmer). Quantitative corpus linguistics techniques are combined with qualitative analysis to examine how Farage creates a distinctive discursive style that is both down-to-earth and emotive. Various markers of register and affect are identified, and three core aspects of Farage's populist appeal to 'the people' are outlined, including the projection of negative emotions, especially anger/violence; the use of questions to provoke reactions; and the deployment of colloquial expressions and catchphrases to resonate with popular audiences and claim the status of 'common sense'.

    Resumen
Communication between company and client has changed with the arrival of social networks on the corporate communication: the bidirectional communication becomes multidirectional (client to client o client to company) and the emotional element constitutes a part of this message. This article is an attempt to analyse how the emotions are communicated throughout the corporate social network. After identifying the emotions with higher presence, we tackle the analysis of evaluation, intensification and approximation strategies that help to conceptualize or evoke the emotions. To do so, we collected a corpus of 3128 publications, which appeared during the last quarter of 2016 and the data was organized in three corpus: postspublished by Dia, commentaries of followers and commentaries of the company itself. The findings afford us the following conclusions: (1) the high frequency of emotions in corporate digital communication, especially throughout the networks such as Facebook, (2) the prevalence of positive emotions in the three subcorpus, (3) the devices of evaluation, intensity and approximation strategies are similar in the three subcorpus; however the use of icon-graphics devices is more free in the comments of followers.

The rise of populism has turned researchers' attention to the importance of affect in politics. This is a corpus-assisted study investigating lexis in the semantic domain of anger and violence in tweets by radical-right campaigner Nigel Farage in comparison with four other prominent British politicians. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses of discourse show that Farage cultivates a particular set of affective-discursive practices, which bring anger into the public sphere and offer a channel to redirect frustrations. Rather than expressing his own emotions, he presents anger as generalised throughout society, and then performs the role of defending 'ordinary people' who are the victims of the elites. This enables him to legitimise violent emotions and actions by appealing to the need for self-assertion and self-defence

Spanish possesses a vast array of items that codify the speaker's degree of certainty or doubt (i.e., epistemic modality), such as quizá, igual, seguramente or sin duda. Little attention has been devoted to them in the field of Spanish as a Foreign Language, especially regarding their semantics. The aim of this article is to show that some of the semantic descriptions of such items reveal inconsistencies in a variety of didactic sources, and this might hinder students from mastering them. We focus on three case studies involving (a) where certain items are allocated in the epistemic scale, (b) how a group of similar expressions are treated, and (c) how the semantics of an adverb is described vis-à-vis its cognates in other languages.

    Resumen
Disciplines within knowledge domains are cross-cutting and shaped by the contributions of cultures and countries. In the field of journalism studies (as in many others), the force of Anglo-Saxon perspectives has outshined other approaches and attempts. Although every tradition-at least in Western culture-intertwines with others, they also have peculiarities that enrich the debate. This article aims to introduce the Spanish-American tradition and, especially, the Spanish one regarding reflections on journalism studies as an academic discipline. The concern for endowing journalism with a disciplinary status has lingered on, particularly because of the passage from schools to universities. Here, in this transition, Spain is characterized by having sparked off a prolonged, intense debate about the elements that define journalism as an academic discipline. Such a discussion has hardly taken place in Latin America. The method is based on a literature review focused on pioneering authors such as Martinez Albertos, Nunez-Ladeveze, and Casasus. Given the relevance of this reflection in Spain, this article elaborates further on the debate and, as a conclusion, brings forward a renewed proposal for defining journalism and describing its subject matter, scope, multidisciplinary nature, and methods.

    Resumen
In my paper I analyze transformations happening in the oral tradition of the Jbala, an Arabic speaking ethnic group inhabiting the western and central part of the Rif mountains of northern Morocco. My analysis centers on the work of two modern poets, who although they see themselves belonging to the oral tradition, compose their poetry in writing. Their poetry is, therefore, characterized by use of two different, and, to some degree, opposite modes of language - the oral and the written. This is especially interesting in the context of the Arabic language, where, officially, only Standard Arabic exists in two modes - oral and written, while its dialectal varieties are seen as exclusively oral forms of communication and `vulgar' poetry. The textual analysis will be substantiated by information received directly from both poets. To complement this analysis I examine this tradition through the lens of major cultural and identity changes occurring in local Moroccan genres and traditions at the national level and argue that the oral tradition of the Jbala is converging with the more popular and prestigious tradition of the malhun.

Recent interest in oral poetic traditions has centred on the possibility of applying cognitive linguistic categories in order to shed light on the nature of poetic improvisation across a range of cultures and historical periods (Boas, 2016). Frames, or topics or scenes, can be seen to be associated with particular scripts, consisting at least partly of formulaic language, which facilitates the process of poetic creation in real time. This paper focuses on the ayyu, a short improvised oral poetic genre common among the Jbala people of northern Morocco. In the first section, I examine the habitual repertoire of two singers, and show how they indeed associate particular frames (love, pilgrimage, etc.) with certain organizational sequences and formulaic phrases that are also found in the context of these frames in the wider corpus of Jebli poetry. In the second part, I focus on the klam, or utterances, inserted in the middle or placed in the end of ayyus that are always ignored in dictated or published versions of these poems. Klam does not strictly belong within the four-line verse, but is consistently delivered during its performance. These utterances seem to have an important role in live performances, operating as a confirmation to the audience that they have picked up the right frame from the rather sketchy information in the quatrain, and from the use of particular formulaic expressions. Interestingly, although the singers generally use the predictable last line, occasionally they come up with a different option, perhaps with a view to surprising their audience or provoking a response.

A hundred years after the publication of the first edition of the commentary to the Epistle of the Romans (1919), the famous Barthian consideration of the analogia entis as "an invention of the Antichrist" and "the reason why I cannot become a Catholic" regains its prevalence. Nonetheless, this assertion has evolved as time goes by. In this article, we will study the answers given by Catholic thinkers as Erich Przywara, Gottlieb Sohngen, Jerome Hamer, Henri Bouillard, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Hans Kung, and some more recent authors of the Italian and Anglo-Saxon areas. The opposition between analogia entis and analogia relationis, concretized in analogia fidei, has developed several interpretations in different directions. This article will suggest the continuity between both dimensions -which are inseparably united to charity- by alluding to their Trinitarian origin.

    Resumen
Recent political trends in many countries have sparked renewed interest in populism. Despite general agreement that the affective/emotive aspects of political communication are particularly important in this, there is little recent analysis of how populists operationalise emotion or how they genuinely differ from mainstream parties in this sense. This article applies mixed methods to explore the 'affective-discursive practices' that characterise the discourses of two opposition parties in the United Kingdom: United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and Labour. Comparison of the frequency of semantic subcategories related to emotion in corpora of press releases published by these parties on their websites is complemented by qualitative analysis of how specific emotional areas such as fear, anger and anxiety are invoked by the two parties. Different 'affective-discursive practices' underpin their discourses, since Labour characteristically frames reactions to social phenomena in terms of worry and concern, while UKIP legitimates fear and anger, but also projects more positive emotions.

    Resumen
The analysis of film discourse from a multimodal and cognitive perspective has shown in recent years that such an approach to the study of cinema is a very fruitful one. Among the various cinematic techniques that may be analysed as pieces of multimodal discourse, the flashback seems to be particularly appealing because, while being very rich and versatile, it is also a fixed device and common enough in film as to be studied in a systematic way. Given those characteristics - formal variety alongside stability - a relevant question would be: how do spectators make sense of film retrospections? To address this question, this paper suggests an examination of the multimodal cues offered by flashbacks in three different films - Ordinary People (1980), Big Fish (2003) and The Help (2011) - and analyses the cognitive processes that those cues activate and which make the comprehension of the flashback possible. What lies at the basis of the flashback scenes proposed is a joint-attention triangle formed by the viewer and the camera, who look together, first at the character in the present and then at the events taking place in the past. Ultimately, such scenes can only be understood in terms of blended joint attention, and they also reveal the importance of other cognitive processes at work, namely time compression, viewpoint integration, and identity and analogy connections.

    Resumen
This article deals with the study about how the Spanish political party Podemos constructs its identity discursively, and tries to answer the question about whether it can be qualified as a populist in the strict sense. The corpus on which the investigation is based is constituted by the "Political document" of Podemos, available on the party's website. After a description of the linguistic features of that text, with particular emphasis on those of lexical-semantic character (with some relevant quantitative and statistical data), the discursive resources used to build the identity of the party are highlighted. The next step is to compare the characterizing features of Podemos's discourse with those provided by other recent studies on populist parties, to conclude that Podemos represents a political party with a clearly populist profile.

    Resumen
The debate on the status and the role of Standard/Classical Arabic versus Dialectal Arabic in the Arab World has a long history. In parallel to this, voices calling for giving Dialectal Arabic the status of the official state language and cancelling Standard Arabic altogether are becoming louder. This debate is being fuelled by the rapidly developing theory of superdiversity which claims that, due to the rapid changes that happened to the world after 1991, and increasing globalization associated with worldwide migration, easy access throughout the world to internet and social networks, video hosting services and satellite television, societies all over the world have become extremely diverse linguistically. This theory also draws on language ideologies, the concept that suggests that the traditional idea of a ¿language¿ is an ideological artefact. Is this approach valid for understanding what is happening in the Arabic language? I will attempt to answer this question by examining the status of the Arabic language on the margins of the Arab world ¿ in Zanzibar. For centuries, the Arabic language has been one of the key languages spoken in Zanzibar, but it has now been practically replaced by Swahili.

This article uses the semantic tagging tools provided by Wmatrix3 to investigate the discourse of corporate annual reports to shareholders from leading UK-based companies in four sectors: pharmaceuticals, food, mining and finance. Six potentially interesting areas of commonality are identified (change, inclusion, size: big, important, cause and effect, and time: begin). Concordance lines from these areas in each subcorpus are then analysed qualitatively to identify the presence of shared value-systems in the discourse of the reports. A contrastive analysis is then conducted which reveals differences between the four sectors in the keyness of areas such as safety, strength, newness and focus, as well as colleague and client orientation. These findings are discussed in the light of previous research on business communication. Finally, some advantages of using semantic tagging over standard corpus linguistic tools are discussed.

    Resumen
The Jbala region in northern Morocco is known for an enormous number of Sufi lodges, shrines of local saints, and the cults of those saints. However, this topic has entirely escaped the attention of modern scholars. This paper focuses on the ziyara, or tradition of pilgrimage to a shrine of a saint, connecting it to the debate on place and space on the one hand, and identity studies on the other. Using a classical ethnographic approach, I analyze one such pilgrimage that took place in 2018, in which I was invited to participate as a guest,. In this paper I understand pilgrimage as a communal spiritual journey and analyze the roles the collective and individual play in it, as well as how and by what means the participants cocreate and experience constructs of place and space.

Fine arts offer opportunities for multimodal approaches in education. Museums and galleries are now aware of their social role, and provide outreach activities designed to bring an understanding of art to a wider public. Their websites offer educational material for school children, showing how artistic knowledge and sensitivity can be cultivated with young age groups. However, little attention has been paid to such didactic material by discourse analysts interested in multimodality. This paper builds on Swales's (2016) article on the genre of the single image account (SIA), which centres on texts about famous paintings written by experts for a general readership. Here, I focus on SIAs for didactic purposes, examining pedagogical resources on the National Gallery's website. Accessible SIAs are combined with suggestions to enhance primary school pupils' learning through creative activities across a variety of modes. Guidelines are provided for writing SIAs for educational purposes in other contexts

The recent waves of migration from Africa and the Middle East to Europe have given rise to an ample volume of research in areas as diverse as sociology, law, international relations, geography and global security. However, such studies tend to focus on members of the active population, mainly men, and young people in full-time education, probably because of the relative ease of contacting these groups. Despite the considerable presence of women in the migrant population, they tend to be less visible than their male counterparts and have attracted less research attention. However, this very invisibility suggests that female migrants have greater difficulty accessing public spaces and are accordingly less integrated into European societies. This problem seems to be particularly acute among women from the Muslim world, where various factors seem to hinder them from participating actively in the workplace.

Narrating Space and Time in Migration Ruth Breeze Sarali Gintsburg Mike Baynham Migration is one of the defining issues of our time. The number of international migrants worldwide has grown enormously over the last half century, motivated by a series of extremely powerful pull and push factors at work on a global level. The scale of this phenomenon is such that today, on a global level, one in every thirty people lives in a country where he/she was not born, with the current number of migrants estimated at 270 million. Substantial numbers of these migrants originated in the Middle East and North Africa region, and also in sub-Saharan Africa, and were motivated, despite danger and hardship, by the promise of a better life elsewhere. Many of them have crossed the Mediterranean or negotiated complex land routes to Turkey and onwards to Europe, while others have remained in countries near their...

Mike Baynham Sarali Gintsburg Migration is a dominant twenty-first-century theme, and its impact on cultural production of different sorts, songs, stories, films and here comedy performance, is hardly surprising, especially in a country like Morocco with its long tradition of migration. Ennaji (2014: 81) argues that Morocco has a deeply rooted culture of migration, such that young children, including girls, while growing up, already feel the pressure to emigrate. Sociolinguistic research on migration stories (e. g. Baynham and De Fina 2005) has focused on oral tellings of the processes of dislocation/displacement involved. Here we focus on the ways that narratives in filmed oral literary production tell the different facets of the migration story, though, as we shall see, many features of performed oral narrative described in the sociolinguistic studies are also present. The theme of migration has attracted creative responses of many kinds, including novels: Ben Jelloun¿s Partir, for example,...

This chapter explores the Protestant approach to practical wisdom, the shift of morality associated with it, and its ecclesiological and social consequences. First, account for Luther¿s spiritualist position, according to which the only possible foundation for morality is subjective illumination provided by God¿s Word to the faithful; it cannot be informed by nature, custom, nor reason (i.e., natural law). Therefore, human nature ceased to be the foundation of social order as it was beginning with Greek-Roman culture. It is also presented Calvin¿s position focused on external works and wealth as a sign of human salvation, which reduces practical wisdom to the best way to found material prosperity. As for their ecclesiological consequences, Luther founded the ecclesial ministry of the common priesthood of all Christians; therein, the priest does not differ from the layperson and it focuses on the hidden Church. For Calvin, as the worldly Christian¿s ordinary life cannot be a path to holiness, the achievement of wealth and power becomes the political implantation of God¿s Kingdom in this world, building a theocracy, i.e., a perfect religious society. This anthropologically pessimistic position helped to transform the Christian idea of progress into ¿progressivism,¿ characterized by an ever increasing productive rationality to attain material prosperity and efficient ecclesiastical organization.

Cross-linguistic studies of phraseology enable us to draw increasingly accurate maps of the specific ways different languages express emotions. This chapter focuses on the phraseology used to express emotions in Spanish, taking English as its point of comparison. We situate the topic within the broad perspective of the presence, absence and control of the emotions, centering exclusively on expressions consisting of non-emotional lexis. First, we investigate phrases indicating presence and absence of emotions in Spanish and English. Second, we examine emotional control and lack of control, finding different patterns in the use of the underlying container metaphor. Finally, we explore linguistic affordances for expressing uncomfortable but vague emotions. We conclude with some comparisons between Spanish and English phraseology.

    Resumen
The move to new open access formats in scientific peer review is thought to have influenced the way referees and authors interact. This chapter considers the genre of author responses to referees in terms of relational work, and compares published responses in an anonymized online open access review system with a similar corpus of confidential responses to referees submitted by traditional means. In general, the online open access responses are longer, more syntactically complex and show more evidence of relational work than the confidential responses. However, when analyzed qualitatively, the proportions of different compliant and non-compliant moves are found to be similar in the two corpora. This chapter thus illustrates continuity and change in one genre¿s transition from traditional to open, online format.

    Resumen
Four corpora constructed from different genre families in business law (academic texts, case law, legal documents, and legislation) are analysed in terms of key parts of speech. The differences between them show that legal academic writing and case law tend to follow patterns comparable to argumentative texts elsewhere, while documents and legislation show unusual patterns of cohesion and modality. These phenomena are related to the functional requirements of the genres in question, and to disciplinary conventions.

    Resumen
The complex culture of the large corporation today is mainly shaped by persuasive rather than coercive means. In its messages, the company moulds its own identity and proposes roles for the different players through discourse, providing the information that is considered appropriate to each addressee, and suggesting what behaviours are desirable or acceptable. This trend is most intense at the beginning of a person¿s life with the firm. How a corporate body engages with would-be and recent recruits is of considerable interest to analysts who focus on the workings of discourse in society. This chapter explores the system of engagement operating multimodally in the recruitment and careers websites of twenty high-profile companies

    Resumen
This book provides practical help and guidance for non-native English-speaking higher education lecturers faced with the need to deliver lectures and seminars in English. It builds on the authors' years of experience as researchers and teacher trainers in the area of English Medium Instruction (EMI), combining practical advice and research findings with useful case studies from different global settings, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Slovakia, Spain, the UK and the USA, and a range of subject areas, such as philosophy, mathematics and genetics. The authors present an overview of what generally happens when university teachers make the transition to teaching in English. After dispelling some common myths and setting out priorities, Ruth Breeze and Carmen Sancho Guinda move on to explain how practitioners can prepare to give lectures and interact with both local and international students effectively in English, tackling difficult issues, such as encouraging participation, promoting creativity and critical thinking, and evaluating written student work. The final chapters address good practices in EMI, proposing ways to achieve excellence in global settings.

-- Contracubierta.

    Resumen
Flashbacks in Film examines film flashback as a rich multimodal narrative device, analyzing the cognitive underpinnings of film flashbacks and the mechanisms that lead viewers to successfully comprehend them. Combining a cognitive film theory approach with the theoretical framework proposed by blending theory, which claims that human beings¿ general ability for conceptual integration underlies most of our daily activities, this book argues that flashbacks make sense to the viewer, as they are specifically designed for the viewer¿s cognitive understanding. Through a mixture of analysis and dozens of case studies, this book demonstrates that successful film flashbacks appeal to the spectator¿s natural perceptual and cognitive abilities, which spectators exercise daily. This book will serve as a valuable resource for scholars interested in film studies, media studies, and cognitive linguistics.

    Resumen
This book explores the politics of ethnicity and nationalism in the Caribbean from a critical discourse-analytical perspective. Focusing on political communication in Trinidad and Tobago, it offers unique socio-political insights into one of the most complex and diverse countries of the Archipelago. Through a detailed reconstruction of Kamla Persad-Bissessar¿s 2010 victorious run for office, this book offers ample empirical evidence of the multimodal discursive strategies that held the key to the success of the first woman PM candidate and her inter-ethnic coalition bid to overcome political tribalism in the country. In parallel, it explores the implications and challenges of the postcolonial Trinbagonian national project, caught between pluralism and creolization. Through its innovative, context-dependent and interdisciplinary CDS approach, this book breaks new ground in Caribbean Studies while at the same time broadening the horizons of the Euro-American tradition of Political Discourse Studies to address the complexities of global postcoloniality.

    Resumen
Metaphors play a central role in political discourse: the images we use to speak about an issue both reveal and configure the way we think about it. In situations of conflict, the metaphors people choose are particularly significant, as they can be used to provoke strong reactions and manipulate public opinion, but also to propose creative approaches to restoring harmony. This collection of studies explores the use of metaphor in contemporary political contexts from the USA to Spain, the Netherlands, Russia and Iran, covering a range of genres from speeches and parliamentary debates to social media.

    Resumen
The political landscape in Europe is currently going through a phase of rapid change. New actors and movements that claim to represent 'the will of the people' are attracting considerable public attention, with dramatic consequences for election outcomes. This volume explores the new political order with a particular focus on discursive constructions of 'the people' and the category of populism across the spectrum. It shows how a unitary representation of 'the people' is a central element in a vast range of very diverse political discourses today, acting to anchor identities and project antagonisms in a multitude of settings. The chapters in this book explore commonality and contrast in representations of `the people¿ in both radical and mainstream political movements, looking in depth at recent political discourses in the European sphere. The authors draw on approaches ranging from Essex-style discourse theory over critical discourse studies, corpus analysis and linguistic pragmatics, to investigate how historically situated categories such as the people and populism become fixed through local linguistic, textual and narrative practices as well as through wider ideological and discursive patterns.
