The Statistical Unit at the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) and the School of Economics at the University of Navarra organized its first Big Data event on Friday March 24th. Participants joined from the Basque Statistical Institute (EUSTAT), Ernst & Young Barcelona and the Everis headquarters in London.

Throughout the event, Big Data was analyzed as a research tool. The conference offered a practical workshop aimed at giving users and companies insight into analysis and use thereof.

The day began with presentations from Jorge Aramendi and Javier San Vicente, both from EUSTAT’s Department of Methodology, Innovation and R&D. They presented the results of their first case study in the Big Data field, which analyzes daily series of hotel room prices, revealing the advantages and disadvantages for hotel shoppers.

Then, Enric Farguell Matesanz, who leads EY-Barcelona Data Science Unit, offered a session on tools for the analysis of Big Data. Farguell Matesanz showed attendees how large companies, such as Google and Amazon, use Big Data and he discussed tools (such as R and RShiny) that users can access to analyze it.

Pablo Urruchi, an analyst consultant at Everis in London, closed the event and presented a tool he developed to make claims and detect fraud.
