The Gold Medal of the University of Navarra is a special recognition for services rendered, awarded by the Grand Chancellor. Since 1985, the University has awarded 25 Gold Medals.

    Eduardo Ortiz de Landázuri
    (posthumously)

    Dr. Eduardo Ortiz de Landázuri was one of the pioneers of the School of Medicine and the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, which he joined in 1958.

    His widow, Laura Bustos, received the medal at an academic ceremony held in his honor.

    Ismael Sánchez Bella, Juan Jiménez Vargas y Álvaro d´Ors

    Ismael Sánchez Bella was the first President of the University between 1954 and 1960.

    Dr. Juan Jiménez Vargas was the promoter and first dean of the University's School of Medicine between 1954 and 1962.

    Álvaro d'Ors joined the University in 1961, where he combined teaching with the start-up and management of the Library.

    Francisco Ponz, Carmen López y Amadeo de Fuenmayor

    Francisco Ponz, Full Professor of Animal Physiology was the third president of the university between 1966-1979.

    Carmen López was the director, of the first management team of Nursing in the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

    Amadeo de Fuenmayor, Full Professor of Ecclesiastical Law of the State, was dean of the School of Canon Law between 1968-1987.

    José Cañadel, Félix Álvarez de la Vega y Joaquín Casellas

    Dr. José Cañadel was director general of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra from 1969-1984 and medical director for a further five years, until 1989.

    Professor Félix Álvarez de la Vega was the first Dean of the School of Pharmacy.

    Joaquín Casellas was the first Director Tecnun from 1962-1978 and Vice President of San Sebastian campus.

    Jesús Vázquez
    (posthumously)

    Professor Jesús Vázquez joined the University in 1960 and served as Dean of the Schools of Sciences and Medicine. He also managed the Department of Pathological anatomy of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

    Asociación de Amigos

    The University awarded its twelfth gold medal to the Asociación de Amigos (Association for Friends of the University). Its president, Álvaro Lacalle Leoup received the medal from the then President of the University, José María Bastero.

    Antonio Valero
    (posthumously)

    Antonio Valero was one of the founders of IESE Business School. The ceremony took place on 11 March in IESE campus in Barcelona and was transmitted via videoconference to IESE Madrid.

    Alfonso Nieto

    Full Professor Alfonso Nieto of Media Management, was the driving force behind university studies in journalism in Spain. He was director of the Institute of Journalism in the University between 1967-1971 and first Dean of the School of Communication between 1971-1974. He was President of the University from 1979-1991.

    Lucas Mateo-Seco, Natalia López Moratalla, Mª Pilar Fernández Otero y Carlos Cavallé

    Lucas Francisco Mateo-Seco was one of the professors who started the School of Theology in the University in 1976. He served on the Board of Management of the School for 23 years.

    The full professor of Biochemistry Natalia López Moratalla joined the university in 1981, where she has held various positions as director of student affairs, associate dean, and vice president.

    María Pilar Fernández Otero was Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition between 1986-1994 and for more than 12 years was Vice president.

    Carlos Cavallé was Director General of IESE Business School between 1984-2001.

    María Teresa Igúzquiza

    During her 48 years working for the University, María Teresa Igúzquiza was the secretary to five Presidents: Francisco Ponz, Alfonso Nieto, Alejandro Llano, José María Bastero and Ángel J. Gómez-Montoro.

    This was the first time this distinction was awarded to a member of staff of the University.

    Alejandro Llano

    Full Professor of Metaphysics Alejandro Llano joined the University in 1977. He was Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (1981-1989) and President of the University (1991-1996).

    Francisco Errasti y José María Bastero

    Francisco Errasti founded the Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada (CIMA) (Center for Applied Medical Research) of which he was Director General. He also started the Institute of Tropical Health of the University and was director general of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra from 1984-1997.

    José María Bastero, President between 1996-2005 was also vice president of Research, Director of School of Engineering and Director of CEIT, Center of Technical Studies and Research in San Sebastian.

    Jesús Prieto, María Ángeles Sánchez y Pilar Sesma

    Full Professor Jesús Prieto was Director of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and the area of Hepatology and Gene Therapy of CIMA.

    María Ángeles Sánchez was Director of Nursing of the Clinica between 1998-2003.

    Pilar Sesma was Dean of the School of Sciences between 1990-2005.
