Javier Sánchez Cañizares, a researcher for the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) ‘Mind-Brain' Group, of the University of Navarra, has published the article ‘The Mind-Brain Problem and the Paradox of Quantum Mechanics Measurement: Should We Disentangle Them' in the journal NeuroQuantology.

As he explains in the abstract, advances in neuroscience have led to an interest in understanding the relationship between mind and brain. The area of quantum mechanics has been present in this debate through the so-called ‘measurement problem', which rejects a deterministic view of nature and, in particular, of the brain.

This work presents some models of quantum mechanics that show a particular point of view on the relationship between the physical activity of neurons and consciousness, it revises the main criticisms of the relevance of quantum mechanics in the brain and also highlights the philosophical reasons for which the mind-brain problem and the ‘measurement problem' should not be separated.

NeuroQuantology, an interdisciplinary journal

"The quantum models that concern the conscious brain almost unanimously emphasize that the ‘measurement problem' in quantum mechanics is closely linked with the core problem of consciousness. It is highly unlikely that one can be solved without solving the other," concludes Professor Sánchez-Cañizares.

NeuroQuantology is an interdisciplinary Journal addressing issues relative to Neuroscience, Psychology, Philosophy and Physics. It is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and appears in the category ‘Neuroscience' of the Journal Citation Reports. Javier Sánchez Cañizares, doctor in Physics and Theology, is a researcher of the ICS group, Mind-Brain, and a member of the Group of Research  ‘Science, Reason and Faith' (CRYF). He also belongs to the international research group on Moral Theology Hypsosis. He works as an assistant director of the journal Scientia et Fides.

The ‘Mind-brain' ICS Group receives funding from  Obra Social "La Caixa".
