Resumen: In this book, Joaquin Lorda makes a clear and enjoyable orderly exposition of E. H. Gombrich theoretical ideas. Preceded by a preface written by Gombrich himself, an introduction outlines the biography of the Viennese art historian, followed by a comprehensive and systematic analysis presented in three large parts. Firstly, the author sets out the principal theories and traditions from which Gombrich draws in creating his own theories. Each one has provided him with a model, paradigm or analogy for clarifying certain ideas: the schema of science attributed to Popper; Freud¿s theory of jokes; the theory of play, as conceived by Huizinga, and rhetoric. The second part focuses on the idea of artistic progress in the West, particularly in the classical periods, and its consequences. Finally, the third part is the central core of this work and forms its principal objective: Gombrich¿s ideas are applied to art theory in general.
