Resumen: The Holy Land was an important reference in the thought of people of the Crown of Aragon and Navarre throughout the thirteenth century and as such influenced royal crusading projects. Templars and Hospitallers catalised these collective longings, such as those related to the care of the poor and the pilgrims or the defense of the Holy Land. Crusading ideals were remarkable references in the ideological constructions boosted by Aragonese and Navarrese kings as well as in their alignment with the papal motivations, although their priority were the conquests in al-Andalus. Nevertheless, the differences between Aragon and Navarre were evident, owing to their different positions and momenta in the so called peninsular reconquest and in their political projection on the international stage. It is worth highlighting the contraposition between the rhetoric, ideological or diplomatic display of Peter II of Aragon and James I and the active role of Theobald I and II in the crusades. All in all, the recovery of the Holy Land was a powerful image in the devotional thought and at the same time a revindication not only in political thought, but also in diplomatic and political actions, as in case of the Kings of Aragon and clearly in the one of the Counts of Champagne.
