Bishop Javier Echevarría
Madrid and Rome (1932-75)
Javier Echevarría was born on June 14th, 1932. The youngest of eight children, he studied at the Chamberí School of the Marist Brothers. He began studying a degree in Law in Madrid and finished it in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran University. He joined the Roman College of the Holy Cross in 1950 and worked closely with Saint Josemaría after being named his secretary in 1953. He carried out this task until the death of the founder of Opus Dei in June of 1975. He was ordained a priest on August 7th, 1955. He accompanied Saint Josemaría on his many trips to different countries in Europe and the Americas to promote the apostolic work of Opus Dei.
