Bishop Javier Echevarría

Madrid and Rome (1932-75)

Javier Echevarría was born on 14 June, 1932. The youngest of eight children, he studied at the Chamberí School of the Marist Brothers. He began studying for a degree in Law in Madrid and finished it in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran University. He joined the Roman College of the Holy Cross in 1950 and worked closely with Saint Josemaría having been named his secretary in 1953. He carried out this task until the death of the founder of Opus Dei in June 1975. He was ordained a priest on 7 August, 1955. He accompanied Saint Josemaría on many of his trips to different countries in Europe and the Americas to promote the apostolic work of Opus Dei.
