The dream of setting up the University of Navarra

ARTICLE

04 | 10 | 2021

St Josemaria visited the University for the last time in May 1975. Looking back, with joy, on its beginnings, he commented: "In the beginning, when the University of Navarra was in its infancy, he said: «My heart will go to a corner of the University». But I don't need to say it: My heart is always with you. Treat it well! Seeing to it that it is good, praying for me".

"From his student years at the University of Saragossa, where he was studying law at the same time as his priestly studies, St. Josemaría was particularly interested in university life, with an appreciation that he repeatedly manifested throughout his life".

This was pointed out by Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, his successor, at the in memoriam ceremony held after the death of the first Chancellor. “I consider myself a university student, and I am passionate about everything that has to do with the university," he himself had said in 1966.

Thus the idea of founding a university had been on St. Josemaría's mind from very early on, certain of the great influence that the intellectual professions have on society.

José Javier López-Jacoiste, one of the first Professors of the School of Law in the Estudio General de Navarra, the beginning of what is now the University, was one of the witnesses of the development of that dream.  On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the School of Law, the first school, I recalled how, from the outset, the project seemed almost impossible. It was not the first time that, throughout history, the project of building a university in Navarra had been initiated, without success.  But if the experience of history was not enough, it should be added that at that time the creation of universities was the exclusive competence of the State.

“I consider myself a university student, and I am passionate about everything that has to do with the university”.

"St Josemaria spoke of various cities to locate begin the University.  He insisted on Pamplona and San Sebastian", recalled Lopez-Jacoiste.  He talked about the project with one and all, shared his worries, asked for suggestions… Because of his legal training, the professor outlined to him the suitability of the Navarre foral regime for that purpose. He did so around the summer of 1951. Law studies began in Pamplona the following academic year.

The dream of building a university had been fulfilled. A dream he passed on to the first ones. A dream he nurtured and encouraged as Chancellor of the University. A dream he dreamed that students, professors and employees would always dream of.

When he launched the university in 1952, St. Josemaría did not write a founding document, he did not draw up statutes or ideals.  It was in conversations, in offices, in dozens of meetings with the first professors and students that he conveyed what he expected of the university.

“The vitality of this university is due principally to the sense of service, to the enthusiasm and to the effort which teaching staff, students, employees and the admirable women of Navarra who do the cleaning, have put into it. If it were not for their efforts, the university would not have been able to keep going”.

RESEARCH: WORK COMMITTED TO THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH

“The university knows that scientific objectivity rejects all ideological neutrality, ambiguity, conformism and cowardice. The love of truth compromises the life and work of the scientist, and sustains his temper in the face of possible uncomfortable situations. Researchers set an example with their own lives, facing problems without fear of sacrifice or the heaviest burdens, assuming their own responsibility. This requires a renewal of faith, which allows us to be always open to divine Wisdom and to its lights of hope”.

"A desire to work for the common good is not enough. The way to make this desire effective is to form competent men and women who can transmit to others the maturity which they themselves have achieved. Shaping the future is the work of many, but very specifically of university professors. There is no university where, in addition to the transmission of knowledge, there is not the complete formation of young personalities".

IMPROVING SOCIETY: SERVING THE COMMON GOOD AND ACCESS TO UNIVERSITY FOR ALL

“A university must educate its students to have a sense of service to society, promoting the common good through their professional work and their civic activity. University students need to be responsible citizens with a healthy concern for the problems of other people and a generous spirit which brings them to face these problems and to resolve them in the best possible way. It is the task of universities to foster these attitudes in their students".

"Everyone who has sufficient ability should have access to higher education, whatever their social background, economic means, race, or religion. As long as there are barriers in these areas, the democratization of education will be just an empty phrase”.

"College years are a period of preparation for finding solutions to these problems. Everyone should be welcome in the university. It should be a place of study and friendship, a place where people who hold different opinions which, in each period, are expressions of the legitimate pluralism which exists in society — may live together in peace".
