"Civil Society and Normativity. The social theory David Hume", the latest book out by Ana Marta González.
"The analysis of Hume regarding human nature is an inexcusable reference for responding to the question of whether or not civil society can regulate itself", states the author, professor of Philosophy and researcher at the ICS.
Professor Ana Marta González has published the book entitled "Sociedad civil y normatividad. La teoría social de David Hume" ["Civil Society and Normativity. The Social Theory of David Hume (publisher: Dykinson)]". It is a collection of seven different works based on the moral philosophy of David Hume. Implications of the XVIII century Scottish author's thoughts regarding the modern social theory and the understanding of normativity and civil society are reflected in the book.
According to the author, "more than just the causes of this present economic crisis, many ask if civil society can truly regulate itself ". In order to respond to this question, one should consider that the analysis made by Hume with regard to human nature "is a point of inexcusable reference".
"To a large degree, his studies on morals principally attempt to show internal normality of a new area of social relationships, specifically different from family and political relationships: the area of civil society", pointed out Ana Marta González.
In this professor's opinion, the collection of studies in her book help us to understand the importance of the Treatise of Hume, "not only for proposing a theory of civilization but most importantly, for guaranteeing the human sense of social development", especially because "they show the normality specifically related to the relationships that make up civil society".
Ana Marta González is a professor of Moral Philosophy at the Universidad de Navarra (University of Navarra), scientific coordinator of the Instituto Cultura y Sociedad (Institute for Culture and Society) and principal investigator of the ICS line of research, "Emotional culture and identity".
