The University, leader in teaching and learning according to the 2019 CYD Foundation annual report

The region of Navarra obtains the best academic performance scores at undergraduate level, and the highest number of international students and rate of graduate employment

The University of Navarra ranks first for teaching and learning according to the 2019 CYD Foundation annual report, issued on 17 December 2020.  The report analyzes the contribution of Spanish universities to development in various areas: teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer and employability. It is produced by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CYD in Spanish) using information from official sources and universities themselves, as well as the results of the CYD ranking published in June of this year.

In teaching, the report highlights that 8 of the 9 indicators are rated in the high performance group at the University of Navarra, as at the Autonomous University of Madrid. The report also underscores the international orientation of the University, which it considers to be one of the leading universities in Spain (6 of the 7 indicators assessed are in the high performance group), along with the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Carlos III University and Ramón Lull University. The University of Navarra also performs well in relation to the percentage of international professors, one of only six universities in the county where over 7% of professors are of international origin.

CYD has also underlined the University of Navarra’s commitment to knowledge transfer, the highest relative rate of such contribution in terms of number of publications cited in patent application documents (1.62% of the total); the University ranks third in Spain in absolute numbers.

At 86.7%, Navarre has the highest academic performance rate

According to the CYD, the rate of academic performance – the ratio of credits passed to credits taken – in degrees offered in Navarre is the highest in Spain (86.7%), followed by Catalonia (84.8%), and Community of Valencia (82.2%). Navarre is also distinguished by its international orientation, second in Spain after Catalonia, largely due the number of overseas students on campus (almost 18% of the total). According to the report, “Navarre is clearly ahead [of other regions]” in this respect, as in the fact that most international students are registered on official programs in the University (not only on exchange programs, such as Erasmus).

According to the CYD, the university system in Navarre is also noteworthy for its understanding results in graduate labor market access, for graduates of both master's and degree programs. In fact, it ranks first for this indicator in degree programs, followed by Madrid, the Basque Country, Castilla and Leon, and La Rioja. Finally, the Navarre university system offers excellent returns on research: it ranks second in Spain after Madrid, based on the number of publications in scientific journals weighted in relation to the overall population.

Challenges facing the Spanish university system

The report highlights seven main challenges for the Spanish university system in the immediate future: the progressive increase in the prominence of private universities; the overqualification of university graduates; limited university research knowledge transfer; the increasing importance of sustainability; greater gender equality; the need for improved funding from public authorities; and finally, enhancing internationalization in university activity.
