Board of Governors

  

In addition to the Chancellery, the Governing Body of the University includes the Board of Governors.

It comprises the President, who presides over it, the Vice Presidents, the Deans or Directors of the Centers, the Administrator, the Bursar, two student representatives and the General Secretary, who acts as secretary of the Board.

 

The University Board of Governors meets in plenary session every month and a half.  

The ordinary governing body of the University is the Executive Council of the Board of Governors, also known as the Office of the Executive Council. It is made up of the President, the Vice Presidents, the Administrator, the Bursar and the General Secretary. This body meets on a weekly basis.

  • Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero

    President

    Born in 1961 in Salamanca. Dr. Sánchez-Tabernero holds a licentiate and doctoral degree in Informational Sciences from the University of Navarra. He is a professor of Information Industries and has directed the Masters in Management of Communication Industries. He has taught Structure of Periodical Information and was the vice president of the department of Social Sciences and the School of Communications at the University of the Basque Country. In 2007 he was made a full professor (or tenured professor). Dr. Sánchez- Tabernero was also the dean of the School of Communications at the University of Navarra between 1996 and 2005.

    He is PDG for the IESE at the University of Navarra and a Visiting Fellow of the European Institute for the Media (Dusserldorf, Germany). He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Manchester (1990-1992) and at Northwestern University in Chicago (1996). He collaborated with the Institute for Media and Entertainment, a center supported by IESE and the School of Communications in New York. He was also the president of the European Media management education association (1998-2004).

    His research is centered on various aspects related to the strategic direction of communications industries. Among his books are, "Las empresas informativas de la Europa sin fronteras" (with C. Garitaonaindía), "Media Concentration in Europe. Industrial Needs and the Public Interest", "El mercado de la información en España" (various authors), "Transparency of Media Control in Spain" (with L. Corredoira), "La industria cinematográfica en España" (with S. Zunzunegui), "La industria de la comunicación" (ed.), "Servicios Comerciales de Información" (with A. Nieto), "Estrategias de marketing de las empresas de televisión en España" (various authors), "Media concentration in Europe. New Trends and Challenges" (with M. Carvajal) and "Dirección estratégica de empresas de comunicación".

    Among his most recent publications are "Los contenidos de los medios de comunicación: Calidad, rentabilidad y competencia", 2008, ediciones Deusto, and "Innovación en los medios. La ruta del cambio", 2012, with professor Javier Pérez-Latre, EUNSA publishing.

    From 2005-2007 he was the first vice president of Institutional Communications at the University of Navarra, after which he was the vice president of International Relations until 2012 when he was named the rector of the University of Navarra.
    He continues to teach classes in the School of Communications and advise students.

      Vice President of Faculty Affairs

      María Iraburu Elizalde studied Biological Sciences at the University of Navarra. She defended her doctoral dissertation in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1992 and from 1993 to 1996 completed a post-doctoral stay at the Liver Research Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

      Since 1996, when she returned to the University of Navarra, her research has centered on the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in hepatic physiopathology and, specifically, on the regulation of fibrosis.

      She has been the Principal Investigator on four projects subsidized by the Regional Government of Navarre and the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, and has directed seven doctoral dissertations to date. In 2007, she became a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Along with her research activity, she has taught in the School of Medicine and the School of Sciences, and has also been Associate Dean of both. In 2005 she was named Vice President of Students.

      Vice President of Students

      Tomás Gómez-Acebo holds a Degree in Chemistry from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Doctoral Degree in Sciences from the University of Navarra. He currently carries out his teaching work as a Professor of Thermodynamics at the School of Engineering (TECNUN) at the University of Navarra, and as a researcher in the Materials Department at the Center of Studies and Technical Research (CEIT).

      His research focuses on the applications of thermodynamics and kinetics to the transformation of materials, especially in relation to powder metallurgy. As a result of this work, he has published 25 articles in international science journals. He has also been a visiting researcher at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden and at the Manchester Materials Science Center in the United Kingdom.

      Among other distinctions, he was Highly Commended at the Euro PM2003 Conference and won the Best Paper Award at the Euro PM2007 Conference.

      At the same time, he is a scientific reviewer for several journals in his area of specialization and a project evaluator for the Spanish Agency for Evaluation and Projection (ANEP), He sits on the Board of Management for the School of Engineering (TECNUN) as Director of Student Affairs. In 2008, he was accredited as a Professor.

      Vice President of International Relations

      Professor Pilar Lostao Crespo, who holds a Degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidad de Murcia, completed her doctoral dissertation in the Department of Animal Physiology at the University of Navarra and obtained her doctoral degree in 1991. During that period, she completed periods of research at York University in the United Kingdom.

      From 1993 to 1996, she worked in the Department of Physiology in the School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Upon returning to Spain, she joined the Department of Physiology and Nutrition at the University of Navarra as an adjunct professor of Physiology and began to streamline and hone all the electrophysiology techniques she learned in the United States. While continuing the lines of work of the department, she set up her own research group. She has been a member of the Board of Management of the Department of Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology, of which she is currently the director.

      Her research, which has accompanied her extensive teaching work over 16 years, focuses on studying the intestinal absorption of nutrients and describing membrane transporters. She has 50 academic publications and has directed 7 doctoral dissertations and 13 master's thesis projects. In the School of Sciences, she has also been the coordinator of the Erasmus/Socrates programs for the degree programs in Biology and Biochemistry.

      She has also been a visiting professor at the Schools of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Universidad de Concepción (Chile) and the David Geffen School of Medicine (UCLA), the coordinator of the Membrane Transporters group of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a member of the Executive Committee of the European Intestinal Transport Group, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry, of which she is the director. She has recently obtained accreditation as a Full Professor from the National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation (ANECA).

    • Pablo Sánchez-Ostiz

      Vice President of Academic Affairs

      Nacido en Pamplona, es catedrático de Derecho Penal desde 2008. Realizó dos doctorados: uno en Derecho sobre Derecho penal tributario, y otro en Filosofía, con una tesis sobre la noción kantiana de imputación. Amplíó sus estudios y realizó estancias de investigación en las Universidades de Múnich, Erlangen-Núremberg y Friburgo, así como en el Instituto Max-Planck de Derecho penal internacional.

      Ha sido becario de la Fundación Alexander von Humboldt y del Servicio Alemán de Intercambio Académico, entre otros.

      Fue decano de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Navarra entre 2005 y 2013 y anteriormente vicedecano. Autor de numerosas obras sobre su especialidad, entre sus líneas de investigación se encuentran: doctrina de la imputación y teoría del delito; y modelos preventivos en la "sociedad de la seguridad".

    • Gonzalo Robles

      Vice President of Communication

      Gonzalo Robles is from Badajoz, has a degree in Information Sciences, PDG from IESE and a PhD in Public Communications from the University, where he has developed almost his entire professional career.

      After teaching at the School of Communication, he was appointed Director of Institutional Communication and later Secretary General, a position he held since 2003. Before that, he worked in various media such as Nuestro Tiempo magazine or the North American newspaper The Miami Herald, as well as in the consulting firm Innovation Media Consulting Group, with which he developed projects in America and Europe.

      He is the author of the book “The Informative Company as a trend company” .

    • Iciar Astiasarán Vice President of Research
    • Iciar Astiasarán

      Vice President of Research

      Holds a Degree (1982) and Doctoral Degree (1985) in Pharmacy from the University of Navarra. In 2006 she became Full Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology.

      She has been Dean of the School of Pharmacy since 2004 and is the co-director of the Institute of Food Sciences at the University (ICAUN).

      She has been a member of several academic committees for conferences and associations and is an evaluator at the National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation (ANECA), UNIQUAL (Basque Country) and AGAE (Andalusia), as well as several academic journals in the areas of Food Science and Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics.

      Académica correspondiente de la Real Academia Nacional de She is a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy (Spain) and a permanent member of the Basque Academy of Science, Arts and Humanities (Jakiunde). In 2006 she was awarded a Gold Medal for her "academic career in Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Safety" from the Provincial Council of Guipúzcoa.

      She has participated in 27 research projects and has directed 20 doctoral dissertations (4 of which received an Award for Excellence and 3 of which were for European doctoral degrees). She has published 120 journal articles, coauthored 19 book chapters, co-edited 9 books and has submitted papers to 80 conferences.

    • Jesús María Ezponda

      General Secretary

      Jesús María Ezponda is from Pamplona, has a degree in Journalism and a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the University, a master's degree in Management of Educational Centers from the Complutense University of Madrid (Villanueva University Center).

      After his professional stage as director of the Miravalles-El Redín School (2001-18) at its headquarters in El Redín, he rejoined the University as Corporate Director of Professional Development. Previously, he was assistant secretary of the School of Communication (1999-01).

      In addition, he has been a member of the School Council of Navarra and president of the Navarra Association of Education Centers.

      Administrator

      He holds a Degree in Telecommunications Engineering and an MBA from the University of Navarra's IESE Business School. Has spent his professional career in the fields of telecommunications and education, where he has acquired broad experience in management and personnel management.

      After completing his program of study at the School of Engineering at Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (specializing in Radio Communication) in 1993, he worked for seven years at Landata Sistemas, a national telecommunications company owned by Corporación IBV. He held various technical and business-related positions at that company until 1998, when he became the director of a new department aimed at offering engineering solutions to cable telecommunications operators in Spain.

      In 2001, he broadened his studies with an MBA from IESE Business School. Since then, he has worked in management roles at a number of schools: Colegio Irabia in Pamplona from 2001 to 2004 and Colegio Gaztelueta in Vizcaya from 2004 to 2006.


    • Álvaro Balibrea Bursar
    • Álvaro Balibrea

      Bursar

      Álvaro Balibrea is a native of Murcia, with a degree in Hispanic Philology from the University, a doctorate in Applied Linguistics and an Executive MBA from IESE. He has developed his entire professional career at the University.

      After teaching at the School of Philosophy and Letters and collaborating as an assistant to the direction of studies, he was appointed Director of International Relations (2004-12) and later Director of Admission, a position he held since 2011. He has been a FPU scholarship holder from the Ministry of Education and visiting scholar at University College London and University of Limerick.

      He has participated as a representative of the University before international organizations such as the European University Association, the American Association for University Administrators, IREG (International Ranking Experts Group) and the CIS (Council for International Schools). He has collaborated in advisory projects for private and public entities, such as the implementation of the Navarra Internationalization Plan. He is Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ecuador in the Foral Community of Navarra.
