Experts from academic centers and universities in the USA, United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland, Kenia, Nigeria, and Spain discussed at the University of Navarra on the future of Africa during the III Development Week. This activity, organized by the Navarra Center for International Development (NCID) of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), was held from 2th to 6th June under the title: Africa: a Promising Future.
During this week, the invited speakers presented research on topics concerning the innovation in companies in the developing countries, the inclusive economic growth, the elimination of inequalities, financial stability or migration. These presentations provide a space for dialogue between experts and the audience.
Prakarsh Singh, professor of Economy at Amherst College (Massachusetts, USA), gave a course on investigation in the developing world: techniques, research areas, methodology, issues and challenges and opportunities.
Scientific solutions for the eradication of extreme poverty. Some of the speakers were Jean Louis Arcand, director of the Finance and development Center, at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Switzerland); Robert Mudida, professor at the School of Business at the Strathmore University (Kenya); Marion Jansen, chief economist at the International Trade Center (Switzerland); Oded Stark, professor at the university of Klagenfurt (Austria), Bonn (Germany), Tübingen (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Warsaw (Poland) and Georgetown University (USA); and Guglielmo Caporale, director of the empirical finance center at Brunel University (United Kingdom).
The NCID is a group of Research at ICS, committed to the pursuit of viable and sustainable solutions to the problems of the human development in the most disadvantaged regions in the world.
For the purpose of achieving the goals outlined in the Millennium Declaration Goals (MDGs), the interdisciplinary research group, - including economists, political scientists and sociologists- seeks to promote scientific solutions to the situations of extreme poverty in the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Through applied research, the NCID attempts to generate ideas for solving chronic social problems related to poverty. It explores three lines that are closely related: the quality of public and private institutions of each country, the transfer of technologies and migration.
The center annually organizes the Development Week to promote a dialogue among academics, experts and students regarding questions related to development.
