Obese children are most likely to develop asthma according to a recent study published by Dr. Noelia Álvarez from the School of Medicine of the Universidad de Navarra. High calorie diets and decreased physical activity are the main causes of developing obesity, a disease that increases the risk of suffering asthma. The relationship between obesity and asthma gets worse among girls; obese girls between 6-7 years old are the most affected by this pathology.
"This population presents five times more risk of suffering severe asthma and four times more of suffering asthma induced by physical exercise", said the expert. Furthermore, asthma gets worse in the absence of eczema on infants, and in the absence of rhinoconjunctivitis or eczema in children and teenagers; "which is very significant because asthma is always related to these pathologies". Finally, the study highlights how overweight infant boys are more likely to exhibit wheezing when breathing.
