Montserrat Herrero's recenty published a new book entitled, Poder, gobierno, autoridad. La condición saludable de la vida política (Power, Government, Authority: The healthy condition for political life. Herrero is professor of moral and political philosophy at the University of Navarra and principal investigator of the Religion and Civil Society project within the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS). The volume has been published by the Center for Political and Constitutional Studies, one of the best academic publishers in Spain according to studies by the University of Granada's EC3 Group and the CSIC Research Group on Academic Books.
The book addresses the understanding of and theoretical distinction among three words that, in common parlance, are used almost interchangeably: power, government and authority. In a quest for conceptual clarity, the author brings to light political correctness criteria: only when institutional spheres of authority and power are distinguished, respectively understood as socially recognized knowledge and socially recognized power, and power aligns with authority, does the possibility of a healthy government emerge, i.e., the peaceful coexistence of a free people.
The book seeks to articulate how to live institutionally in a healthy political environment. In developing this idea, the author cites topics relevant to politics, such as the specificity of the political, its relationship to violence, political legitimacy, sovereignty and democracy's possibilities in a multicultural society.
Montserrat Herrero is the author of other political philosophy books, such as The Political Discourse of Carl Schmitt. A Mystic of Order (2015), La política revolucionaria de John Locke (John Locke's revolutionary politics) (2015), Ficciones políticas. El eco Thomas Hobbes en el ocaso de la modernidad (Political fictions: Thomas Hobbes' echo at the end of modernity) (2012), among others. She has been the director of the Anuario Filosófico journal since 2014.
