More than fifty scientists have participated in the III Symposium for Tropical Health organized by the Institute of Tropical Health of the Universidad de Navarra, addressing the latest advances made in diagnosis, vaccines and treatment of diseases such as leishmaniasis, brucellosis and Chagas disease, among others, which affect more than 6 billion personas throughout the world.

This event brought together experts from different institutions including the Universidad de Granada or the Universidad de León, the hospital Ramón y Cajal of Madrid and the company CerTest Biotec. In addition, close to twenty posters were presented for studies related to tropical diseases such as:  Drug combinations to fight against visceral leishmaniasis, Carbonic anhydrases and CO2 dependence in Brucella, Exploring new hydrazine and hydrazide quinoxaline 1,4-di-n-oxide derivatives as potential antimalarials, Self-adjuvanted liposome-like vaccine against bacillary dysentery, and Immunological characterization of the Trypanosomatid serine/threonine-protein kinase “Jean3”.

“One of the points emphasized in the presentations was the fact that the infant population continues to be at the greatest risk and that we should focus on finding solutions to this problem. Nevertheless, and although it’s a long road to follow, there is hope because we have seen that the possibility of developing vaccines, diagnostic tools and drugs brings the day in which we can finally eradicate these neglected diseases much closer”, explained Paul Nguewa, director of the Institute.
