Patricio Fernández Ugarte, researcher at the University of Navarra’s Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), has received a Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, one of the most prestigious academic awards in the world.

He will join the School of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Religious Studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany), and will be hosted by professors Christof Rapp and Monika Betzler.

Specifically, Fernández will develop a philosophy research project on the nature of the connection between moral agents’ ordinary ethical knowledge and moral theorists’ philosophical ethical knowledge. This project corresponds to his two main areas of work, namely contemporary practical philosophy in the analytical tradition and ancient philosophy.

"This project is an important step towards the achievement of a long-term goal to contribute to the development of a conception of practical rationality that respects our self-understanding as beings conscious of ourselves, capable of changing the world through our thought,” Fernández noted.

Patricio Fernández Ugarte, a native of Chile, holds a PhD in Philosophy and Economics from Harvard University (USA). In the 2016-2017 academic year, he joined ICS’s Emotional Culture and Identity project. He previously worked as an academic at the University of Los Andes (Chile).

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes and supports national and foreign talent to carry out research in Germany within different social, scientific and humanistic disciplines. Annually, it grants some 400 research fellowships for non-Germans, which are considered among the most prestigious in the world along with the Fulbright and Marie Curie.
