Integrated Internships

Internship

The Universidad de Navarra’s Master’s in Spanish Second Language Teaching is unique both in the sheer volume of internship hours it offers (30% of the course load - 24 ECTS) and in its approach to this comprehensive education.

Throughout the academic year, Master’s students will have meetings with their mentor to coordinate their internship. More than 60 hours of mentorship serve as a reliable guarantee for each student’s learning and the development of their educational profile.

In their internships, Master’s students will observe and teach Spanish classes advised by their mentors: an experienced professor. In this way, students will have the opportunity to simultaneously put their knowledge of pedagogical theory and teaching methodology into practice.

Through ILCE activities (among others), MELE students will be able to interact with students of varying language levels and nationalities to encourage improvement throughout the program. They will also be able to practice with courses formatted in various ways: semester-long, intensive, custom-made, and Spanish for specific purposes.

Master’s students will also proctor language level placement and certification tests for foreign exchange students at the university. For students who become certified by the Cervantes Institute, they may also collaborate in the certification exams organized by the Universidad de Navarra as official testers for the Instituto Cervantes (DELE) and the SIELE Program.

Student mentorship and advising is especially important in this MA program. A teaching-learning model that simultaneously develops theoretical and practical learning is followed. For this reason, each student is provided with personalized academic advising and mentorship as a part of their education.

Throughout the academic year, Master’s students will meet with an academic advisor (at least once a month) and with a teaching mentor. Students will have weekly meetings with their mentor (most frequently during the first five weeks) to plan out their internships. More than 60 hours of mentorship serve as a reliable guarantee for each student’s learning and the development of their educational profile. Most of mentorship time is devoted to individual sessions with each student. In these meetings, the student and mentor go over lesson plans, course outlines, questions about methodology, and class dynamics.

The mentor also observes two classes taught by their student throughout the semester. With the information collected, the mentor writes up a progress report in order to provide formative feedback to the student. Students also meet with the director of the MA once a month to evaluate the development and progress of each student and determine new objectives for improvement.

To foster a more practical immersion experience in a professional context, each Master’s student is integrated into the ILCE team. They participate in ILCE team meetings and activities within the context of a Spanish university department. Students are immersed into the professional environment by learning to cooperate with other teachers and participating in academic activities, conferences, seminars, and cultural and linguistic immersion activities related to teaching Spanish.

ILCE has several well-established international agreements. Students who request it and meet the necessary requirements can spend their third internship period at an institution other than the Universidad de Navarra.
