On November 14 in Madrid, Dr Marta Alonso Roldán, a researcher at CIMA and the University Clinic of Navarra, was awarded one of the L'Oréal-UNESCO "For Women in Science" research fellowships. This program has, for the last 13 years, given great support and backing to Spanish women researchers, and has promoted scientific vocations.

Dr Alonso's project focuses on the development of new therapies for cerebral tumors in children. At present, her team is researching a smart virus capable of differentiating between normal and tumor cells. "This virus is already being used clinically in adults and has produced very encouraging results. This is why we would like to test it on children ", Marta Alonso explained.

Others winners of this award, chosen through a strict selection process from among 300 candidates, are María Ángeles Tormo, for her outstanding study of the "Staphylococcus aureus" bacteria, which causes significant infections in both humans and animals; Reyes Benlloch, for her studies on photoreceptor proteins in plants; Begoña Sot, who is studying the proteins involved in neurodegenerative diseases and Laura Herrero, who is researching new therapies against obesity and diabetes type 2.
