PhD candidates at the University of Navarra usually begin their doctoral program of study at the start of the academic year (September 1). To do so, the official application to the University must be made before May 31. Once admitted to the program, students must complete their enrollment, usually during the second half of the month of August.
Each academic year there are 40 places for new candidates, of which 5 are reserved for students who are enrolled part time. Students who are enrolled full time have a period of three years to defend their doctoral dissertation, which can be extended by one year if the supervising academic committee and the board of management issue a favorable report; in exceptional cases the period can be extended for an additional year beyond that. Part-time students have a period of five years to defend their doctoral dissertation, which can be extended by one-year increments for up to three additional years if the supervising academic committee and board of management issue a favorable report. The period for completion commences on the date of the student's admission decision and ends on the date of the dissertation defense.
