A book devoted to predication from a philosophical point of view, which deals with the main problems on the topic: the nature of predication, the history of the notion, the role of the copula, the role of names, the ontology of propositions, the syntactic and semantic analysis of propositions, the pragmatics of saying, the connection between logic and ontology. Two rival paradigms are distinguished, the Aristotelian and the Fregean analysis of predication, and the impression is transmitted that the Fregean one has some limits and might be refined. The most promising orientations in this book are: the attention paid to ontological questions, the search for alternatives to the dominant paradigm, and, in sum, the sense that there is something special in the act of "saying".

En este artículo estudio cómo Jerónimo Pardo (un autor español del terminismo tardío) introduce subdivisiones en la noción de ¿significación¿ para analizar la posibilidad y límites de la suposición material como instrumento de autorreferencialidad. Estas subdivisiones no son ad hoc, puesto que distintos conceptos median de distintos modos en la significación del lenguaje vocal.

I examine a sixteenth-century development of the anti-realist propositional semantics which is based on the notion of `mode¿. Pardo uses this notion to offer a personal interpretation of the Buridanian criticism of complexe significabilia. He develops a middle way between the reduction of the significate of propositions to particular things and the postulation of non-standard entities which are only complexly signifiable. The key to this middle way is Pardo's understanding of the notion of `mode¿ as connoting a relation between individual things. He offers a new interpretation of the signification of syncategorematic terms, and a definition of `comparative¿ notions, by which something is known `relatively¿ with respect to some other thing. And a real relational correlate is postulated for these relational ways of knowing. Relations are thus used to grant a specific significate of propositions, without renouncing the strict Buridanian rejection of any extra-categorial complexe significabilia. The role of relations in Pardo's propositional semantics consists in allowing a new (intensional) understanding of the significate of propositions.

This volume pays homage to the historian of logic Angel d¿Ors (1951-2012), by bringing together a set of studies that together illuminate the complex historical development of logic and semantics. Two main traditions, Aristotelian and terminist, are showcased to demonstrate the changes and confrontations that constitute this history, and a number of different authors and texts, from the Boethian reception of Aristotle to the post-medieval terminism, are discussed. Special topics dealt with include the medieval reception of ancient logic; technical tools for the medieval analysis of language; the medieval theory of consequence; the medieval practice of disputation and sophisms; and the post-medieval refinement of the terminist tools. Christine Ladd was a promising mathematician who converted to logic and philosophy under the guidance of Charles S. Peirce. Her contribution to the algebra of logic is known among historians of logic, and her famous ¿antilogism¿ received acknowledgement from the algebraic logicians of the time. But the interest of Ladd¿s logical system is not restricted to the development of Boole¿s project. Concentrating on the application of Ladd¿s algebra to the analysis of syllogisms, I highlight Ladd¿s innovations with respect to the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition: I show how Ladd abandons the old point of view (predication), in favour of the new algebraic one (combination of terms), with the interesting feature of giving preference to symmetrical ways of combination. In Ladd¿s logical system, both the traditional figures and moods, and the traditional validity principles are translated into one single formula for every valid syllogism, which exhibits the inconsistency of affirming the premises while negating the conclusion. This result not only involves Peirce¿s ideal of iconicity, but is also the basis for an innovative view of logic in which discussing, rather than concluding, captures the true form of reasoning.

This article deals with a brief difficultas in the Tractatus de compositione propositionis mentalis by Fernando de Enzinas: qualiter copule significent tempus et an copule de presenti et preterito sint synonime. A progressive determination of the signification of the copula is analysed: first, Enzinas defines his position about the principal syncategorematic signification of the copula; then, he analyses the sense of the consignification of time traditionally attributed to the copula. The originality of Enzinas’ position is highlighted, given the fact that he gives preference to the question as to how the copulae signify time rather than the question as to which time the copulae signify.
