The charism of care inspired the foundation of various medieval religious orders, the Order of St John of Jerusalem being the most renowned of these. This article uses a case study of a female Hospitaller convent in Bargota in the kingdom of Navarre, to examine to what extent the charism of hospitality influenced the Order's decision-making. By identifying the factors lying behind the foundation of the convent in the early fourteenth century and its dissolution a century later, it contributes to the discussion on the relevance of female Hospitaller monasticism in the Late Middle Ages and argues that the Order sustained the convent as long as the women's care-worthiness outweighed the burden of cura monialium.

We propose a Spanish version of a unique document, edited so far only in Polish, namely a transcript of a recording of a conversation between the General Council of the Polish Bishops' Conference and Pope John Paul II, held on 5 June 1979 in Czestochowa, during John Paul II's first trip to Poland in June of that year. It was his second pastoral trip, after the one to Mexico. The source is of great richness, as it unveils with uncommon openness the views of the Pope and the Polish bishops on the meaning and scope of the papal journey. It deals essentially with pastoral and ecclesiastical questions, but does not avoid political issues, which are dealt with in a direct, clear and historically significant manner. The text provides a first-hand account of how the Catholic Church lived under the communist oppression and what they expected from the Pope's pilgrimage to his homeland, the significance of which the participants of the meeting were fully aware. In the course of the conversation, one learns about the perception they had of the meaning of the action of the Catholic Church and its government, the role that Church in Poland played within the Universal Church, the priorities of John Paul ii's government and the expectations towards other religious authorities, as well as the communist regime at that time and in the future.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Jewish quarters, known as juderías, were vibrant spaces in Navarrese cities and towns. However, although Jewish past significantly contributed to Navarre's historical identity and has occupied an important place in regional historiography, Jewish heritage has only recently awakened interest in historians, archaeologists and local councils. This article aims to carry out case studies of three different juderías, specifically in Tudela, Estella and Pamplona, as cultural and tourist assets and discuss the weaknesses and strengths of their touristic potential. Tudela has been making use of this potential for several years now, while Estella only rather recently began to explore the diverse ways of taking advantage of its latent qualities. On the contrary, to date, Pamplona seems to have totally ignored the Jewish component of its medieval past. This article argues that the (in)visibility of Jewish heritage is an apt indicator of the recognition that supply-side stakeholders give this cultural and touristic asset.

The region of Navarra provides ample opportunities to explore interreligious aesthetics.Made internationally famous by Ernest Hemmingway¿s Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises, andmore recently, as one of the most picturesque stages of the popular Camino de Santiagowalking pilgrimage, Navarra is located between the French and Spanish provinces of theBasque Country, La Rioja and Aragon. Born during the Reconquista, Navarra was anindependent kingdom up to 1512 when it was incorporated into the crown of Castile.Through the modern period it struggled to maintain its own cultural, religious and legalidentity within the Spanish Monarchy. In this article we examine the representation andcontestation of religions in the artistic and material culture of this province. We do this inorder to consider how religious narratives may be expressed and contested by invoking thesenses. We focus on examples of Navarran material culture that dispute or support historical narratives relevant to the ongoing identity politics of the regional government, nationalist groups, religious communities and the tourism industry. By considering theseexamples we make a wider contribution to the theory of interreligious aesthetics, arguingthat religious difference is not only symbolically represented in architecture, images, art,and ritual, but can also be its raison d'être.

Prelates or magnates? Spiritual or temporal lords? Scholars who study the relationship between the Order of Saint John and the monarchy usually ask these questions about the status of the Hospitaller priors among the elites in their respective realms. This paper aims to look into this matter in the Kingdom of Navarre in the Late Middle Ages. This issue became a bone of contention between the prior of Canons regular of Roncesvalles on the one hand and the prior of Saint John on the other as early as the sixteenth century. This feud and the arguments that both sides gave for and against their claim have been used as a starting point for examining the courtly position of Hospitaller priors during the preceding two hundred years. The present study is based on analysing records of royal ceremonies and acts that provide valuable information about ritual communication in public space, where precedence reflected not only the kingdom¿s symbolic, institutional order, but also set the stage for political action.

The purpose of this article is to look into the life of Jewish communities in the Christian and Muslim Middle East in the twelfth century and to contribute more widely to interreligious understanding of the common Past. To this end, the legislation relative to Jews as a minority will be contrasted with an account of a Sephardic traveller, Benjamin of Tudela, who described his experience of the encounter with the Jewish diaspora and left a unique source for the study of mutual perceptions between Christian and Muslim societies on one hand and Jewish communities living under their rule on the other.

One could say that radio and independent Poland are peers. Since the early 20th century, once the achievements of scientists and inventors allowed remotevoice transmission, radio and radio broadcasting developed rapidly, and the radioset soon became a permanent device in almost every household. The radio arrived in Poland at almost the same time as the country reappeared on themap of Europe, and since then it has continuously influenced the nature of its society and statehood. In the times preceding the spread of the Internet, andnowadays, when Internet access is difficult or impossible for whatever reason, radio was, is, and will continue to be its equivalent: the fastest and cheapestsource of information, as well as a culture-making, sound window on the world, which develops the imagination and broadens our cognitive horizons.
The text is based on scientific, popular science and journalistic studies, printed and published online, or on conventional publications and primarysources, with documents, reportages, interviews, and the authors¿ own collections. It is accompanied by rich photographic material from institutional andprivate, Polish and foreign archives. In several places, the authors have giventhe voice to witnesses of the stories described and experts in the issues at hand.It was not the authors¿ intention to provide an exhaustive study of the subjectmatter ¿ this would be neither justified nor even possible. To paraphraseW¿adys¿aw Niemczy¿ski, the author of the first Polish radio textbook (1925),¿a certain superficiality resulted from this approach, but not in the sense ofskipping difficulties, but in the sense that by emphasizing the most importantdetails a clear overall picture was created¿.
