Ana Azurmendi Adarraga

Ana Azurmendi is Full Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Navarra. Her research focuses on Media Law; in particular, Media for Democracy, Freedom of Expression, Digital Rights, Public Broadcasting, and Copyright. Part of the team of IBERIFIER Digital Observatory against Disinformation, promoted by the European Commission; and REMED, Resilient Media For Democracy in the Digital Age, an European Research Project. She has been the main researcher of four research projects and researcher in eight more projects, funded by public institutions, all of them focused on freedom of expression and regulatory aspects of media.
In this area, she has been involved in the promotion of freedom of information and legal protection of journalists in México, through the association Derecho de la Información, and with the support of Art. 19 Freedom of Expression NGO and Konrad Adenauer Foundation (1998-2003). The second area of political work has been the audiovisual sector, where she has been doing consultancy work, in addition of being speaker in Parliamentary seat, for the Commission for the Reform of the Law on Audiovisual Media, of the Parliament of Galicia (2010); for the Commission for the Right to Reply in Audiovisual Services, of the Senate of México DF. (2014); and for the Communication and Media Commission for the Reform of the Basque Public Broadcasting, of the Parliament of the Basque Country (2016).
She has been coordinator of the AEIC (Spanish Association for Communication Research) section, Communication Policy (2014-2021) one of the most important national associations of communication researchers in Spain.
Referring to international stays, she has been visitor researcher at the Center for Socio Legal Studies, University of Oxford (2019 and 2007); at Trinity College, Dublin, (2016); at the Department of Politics, School of Social Sciences, University of Manchester (2011); at Ruhr-Universitat Bochum (2001); at the Faculty of Administrative Studies, York University, Toronto (1995); and at the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law, University of Minnesota, St Paul-Minneapolis (1993). In addition of stays as visiting professor in the Programme of Comparative Media Law, University of Oxford (2006); at the Université of Paris II, Pantheon-Assas, 2003; and at the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas UNAM-Universidad Iberoamericana-Universidad de Occidente (México DF and Mazatlán, 1997,1998, 1999, 2002, 2003).
At the University of Navarra, she has been Director of the Digital Unav - Center for Internet Studies and Digital Life (2018-2021), and Editor of the Journal Communication&Society (2007-2013), one of the most relevant academic journals of communication in Spain
Author of more than 150 academic publications, among them the books Media Law in Spain (Wolters Kluwer 2018) and the influential Derecho de la Comunicación. Guía jurídica para profesionales de los medios (Eunsa and Bosch, 1997, 2001, 2011 and 2016) which has received two specific mentions in Resolutions of the Constitutional Court of Perú, nº 3362-2004-AA/TC, 28 September, 2006, on freedom of expression; and of the Supreme Court of Chile, rol 1.290-99, Sentence of 29 de Julio 1999, on the right of reply. In addition to the book "El derecho a la propia imagen" (Civitas Aranzadi, Manuel Buendía, 1997 and 1998).
