This paper clarifies why context-specific studies have scientific merit and provides recommendations to authors and journal stewards on how to develop them well. A context-specific study is a study in a unique setting yielding conclusions that can be considered to have limited generalizability to other settings. A firm's industry-think of pharmaceuticals, video games, movies, platform markets, sharing economy-may represent an unambiguous example of a specific context. Unfortunately, the generalizability-specificity dilemma is often misunderstood. Generalizability is excessively heralded as the ideal, and studies in specific contexts are too often denigrated, while both intrinsically can be valuable to the advancement of knowledge. The present paper aims to (1) provide a more nuanced system of beliefs for marketing scholarship to adopt in favor of specificity; (2) offer a helping hand to authors and editors when developing and publishing context-specific studies; (3) review successful examples from the prior literature; and (4) offer clear implications for scholars.

Ever since the birth of web 2.0, consumer-controlled, Internet-based technologies, such as blogs, social networking sites, and wikis, have been forcing firms to reconsider their marketing strategies. First, as many studies have shown, younger consumers watch less television as other screens compete for their attention, leading to substantially lower advertising elasticities over time. Second, people are more willing to express negative opinions of brands, because web 2.0 provides them with mechanisms for self-expression and establishes sufficient critical mass to attract firms' attention to their problems. The widely publicized conflict between Dave Carroll and United Airlines and the videos of bicyclists destroying Kryptonite locks help illustrate the extent to which consumers' dissatisfaction can damage brands. Third, on the other side of the coin, firms can attain some unique benefits from the web 2.0 phenomenon. For example, viral marketing offers a form of communication and distribution that relies on customers to transmit digital messages or products through their electronic devices to other consumers. With good viral marketing, marketers get customers and potential consumers do their job for them

The article offers the authors' insights on the impact and significant use of social media to the marketing mix of a company. The authors state that many companies have started to delimitate key aspects of their marketing mix to include social media, such as the online word of mouth (WOM), and they use social media as alternative to traditional advertising. They also present a table which differentiates traditional advertising and WOM, in terms of credibility, interactivity, and intrusiveness.

In this monograph we examine the extent to which word-of-mouth communication (WOM) plays a complementary and/or substitute role with regard to advertising. A review of the existing literature reveals the main similarities and differences between these constructs. We also examine the conditions in which a social contagion process is most likely. Specifically, our literature review helps us answer the following questions: whether WOM complements the advertising effect, when and how WOM can be a substitute of the marketing effort, and which issues limit WOM's ability to inform and persuade consumers. Published empirical evidence suggests that in most cases WOM complements advertising; however, three marketing strategies ¿ viral marketing, referral reward programs, and a firm's creation of exogenous WOM ¿ might work without advertising. This monograph concludes with a list of unanswered questions of potential interest to both researchers and managers

Managers and investors need information about the performance and future prospects of a firm. If information is relevant in steering a business, it is also relevant for its investors' investment decisions. Recent initiatives demand information that supplements and complements a firm's financial statements to bridge the gap between financial statement capabilities and financial reporting objectives. Firms that aim to increase the value of their customer base should manage their business by future-oriented customer metrics. They should also report this information externally because it aligns customer management with corporate goals and investors' perspectives. The authors propose a means to report customer equity that enables monitoring firms' performance with respect to their customer assets. Furthermore, they develop a specific model for Netflix and apply it to quarterly reports that cover more than six years

Una de las conclusiones del estudio del año pasado fue que muchas empresas se plantean incrementar sus ventas mediante redes indirectas. De hecho, éstas han sido siempre una opción que han utilizado las empresas para crecer "geográficamente". Con ellas se puede crecer de una manera rápida y a coste "variable", con un buen conocimiento local pero? ¿qué pasa cuando las ventas no despegan? O, por el contrario, ¿qué pasa cuando las ventas empiezan a ser importantes y recurrentes? ¿qué pasa cuando hay divergencia de intereses comerciales? Las redes indirectas ofrecen un crecimiento flexible pero ¿a qué coste? La información comercial no suele fluir de manera óptima y además nos alejamos del control de la acción comercial en el mercado. En este segundo estudio sobre la gestión de redes comerciales en España, queremos responder a estas y a otras preguntas. Por tanto, el lector tiene ante sus manos el resultado de un trabajo iniciado hace unos meses y cuyos resultados se han plasmado en este documento. Al igual que ocurrió en el anterior estudio, nuestra fotografía a las redes de venta indirectas españolas refleja un amplio margen de mejora. Primera encuesta realizada por el IESE sobre la gestión de redes de ventas en España. El cuestionario, elaborado en colaboración con Barna Consulting Group, se distribuyó entre directores generales, directores comerciales y directores de ventas tanto de grandes empresas como de Pymes de una gran variedad de sectores españoles. El objetivo del informe es que todos ellos reflexionen acerca de la profesionalización de nuestras fuerzas comerciales en un entorno como el actual, de fuerte recesión económica, y que dicha profesionalización redunde en una mayor productividad de las empresas españolas

his chapter will explore how media companies can use social networks for selling their products and services. We will suggest that the Web 2.0 is an efficient way to create and protect brand recognition, but it cannot be used as a substitutive of traditional marketing channels. First of all, we will analyze the nature of social networks: what are the reasons for their success, what are their competitive advantages and how they built entry barriers. Then, we will look at the expectations of networks' members, considering different typologies: frequent users vs. occasional users, ¿focused¿ networks vs. non specialized networks, young audiences vs. old audiences¿ After that, we will study how some of the most innovative companies are using social networks as a new option of their marketing mix. We will pay attention to cases of success but we also describe some failures and we will try to understand the reasons for those different results. Finally, we will show how media companies can make an efficient use of the most popular social networks to foster the value of their brands and also to avoid a possible spiral of negative opinions from unhappy consumers. We will use descriptive and qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with managers of companies.
