Eduardo Bayo graduated with Honors in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1976. After 2 years of consulting as a structural engineer with Gibbs & Hill, he attended U.C. Berkeley receiving his Masters in Engineering in June 1980 and his Ph.D. in January of 1983, in the field of Structural Mechanics. He specialized in structural analysis, finite element technology and structural dynamics. After completing his Ph.D he led a research group at INITEC, one of the largest engineering-consulting firms in Spain, responsible for the solution of specialized problems in structural analysis and design of offshore platforms.

He initiated his academic career as Assistant Professor of Structural Mechanics at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), in January 1986. He became Associate Professor in 1989 and Full Professor at UCSB in 1994. Since 1995 he has been a Professor and Head of the Department of Structural Analysis and Design at the University of Navarra. He has received research fellowships from the Spanish "Instituto Nacional de Industria", the Ford Motor Company, the University of California Regents' Fellowship, the Spanish Ministry of Education and the NATO Affairs Division. He received the Arcelor-Mittal endowed Chair granted to the University of Navarra from 2003 to 2008.

He was invited to lecture at the University of California, Berkeley, the whole academic year 2008-2009, and at Harvard University during the summer of 2012. He has also been invited to give seminars at the USSR Academy of Sciences, the University of Rome "La Sapienza", the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois, the University of Southern California, Cornell University, Tohoku University (Japan), the University of Pisa, among others. He has participated in NATO sponsored Advanced Study Institutes. His current research interests center on the analysis and design of steel and composite structures, wind energy applications to buildings, steel connections, stability analysis, nonlinear behavior and plastic structural steel design. He has led 12 Ph.D. theses and written 8 books and over 140 publications in the areas of steel structures, dynamics, structural analysis and computational mechanics.

He has received research funding from the European Commission (within the Research Fund for Coal and Steel program), the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the US Army Research Office, the US National Science Foundation, the Spanish Ministry of Education and different corporations and private institutions. The Spanish Ministry for Science and Technology, and the European Commission through the RFCS program (Research Fund for Coal and Steel) support his research.

He is member of the ECCS (European Convention for Constructional Steelwork) Committee TC-10 on Steel Connections, the Spanish Committee in charge of the Structural Steel Code, and the AEN/CTN140/SC3 Committee Eurocode 3: Structural Steel Design. He provides technical review to the Journal of Engineering Structures, Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Journal of Nonlinear Dynamics, ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. He is a charter member of the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute. He has participated in the analysis and design of civil works and buildings, has developed new methods of analysis and contributed to state of the art finite element computer code
