Freedom is not identical with free choice, or the capacity of deciding between diverse and contingent alternatives. It is not the variety of options that increases voluntariness and liberty in willing, but the kind of goods. As these are always preferable as coming together, and not as alternatives excluding each other, the greatest and most freely beloved goods are always unique, necessary, and --as such-- ineligible and never chosen.

La libertad no coincide con el libre arbitrio, la capacidad de elegir entre alternativas diversas y contingentes. No es la variedad de opciones lo que incrementa la voluntariedad y libertad del querer, sino la índole de los bienes, siempre preferibles cuando coinciden en un solo objeto, y no repartidos entre alternativas opuestas a elegir. De ahí que los bienes mayores y más libremente queridos sean aquellos sin alternativa, únicos, necesarios y, como tales, inelegibles y nunca escogidos.
