Presentation

This purpose of this new program is to train students to become experts in areas related to the integration of new technologies, concepts, and developments in the various fields of architecture. The purpose is not to provide a general education, but rather to enable specialization in different areas within the field of architecture, with a strong interdisciplinary component. To this end, two research lines are offered within the doctoral program:

- Design and Environmental Management of Architecture: Aims to minimize the impacts produced by buildings and their urban environments. Acting in the reduction of energy consumption, materials and water, as well as discharges, emissions, noise, waste, land occupation, modification of ecosystems, fire, etc., as well as from a global concept of sustainability (environmental, economic and social).

- Technological Design for Architecture: Development of new criteria and design techniques that make it possible to build using technologies, while following current regulatory requirements, together with the optimized management of the building process. New methods of designing structures made of steel, wood, and mixed materials, as well as digital tools that favor the saving of resources, and transfer and integration of new technologies to the productive sector. New materials and construction systems for the design of building enclosures, both exterior and interior, as well as for the installation of all facilities and their finishings.

The doctoral program is implemented within the framework established by RD99/2011.

  • Background

The Doctoral Program in Environmental and Technological Design in Architecture is coordinated by the Department of Construction, Installations and Structures (CIS). The goal is to train students to become experts in topics related to the integration of new technologies, concepts and developments, in the various fields of architecture.

The purpose is not to provide a general education, but rather to enable specialization in different areas of architectural knowledge, with a strong interdisciplinary aspect.

  • Participating Departments

The following University of Navarra departments participate in the development of the doctoral program:

    • The Department of Construction, Installations, and Structures.

Similarly, professors from other University of Navarra departments may also participate in the development of the program. This occurs mainly in the co-direction of doctoral theses.

In the same way, professors and doctors from other national and foreign institutions may also participate in the program, as they have been doing, either in the co-direction of doctoral theses, the teaching of seminars, mobility actions (both for doctoral students and professors), and participation in the thesis courts convened to obtain the European/ International Mention in the title of doctor, etc.

  • Academic Committee

Responsible body for the direction and academic management of the program. It is made up of the program coordinator, the vice-dean/ assistant director responsible for the third cycle at the center, and the corresponding deputy director of the Doctoral School.

    - Coordinator: Eduardo Bayo (ebayo@unav.es)

    - Director of the center/responsible for the doctorate: Miguel Ángel Alonso del Val (adeval@unav.es)

    - Deputy director of the Doctoral School: Pedro Crespo (pcrespo@ceit.es)

  • Quality

The University of Navarra has an Internal Quality Assurance System (IQAS) for all undergraduate and master study programs, which was implemented in 2006. In the 2014/2015 academic year, coinciding with the first three years of delivery of the Doctoral Programs regulated by the Royal Degree 99/2011 of January 28th, which regulates official doctoral studies, it was agreed to implement the IQAS for Doctoral Programs in the 2015/2016 academic year. To this end, the existing quality assurance processes were adapted to extend to the doctoral programs, approving a model of satisfaction surveys and a specific results analysis template for these studies.

The Quality Assurance Committee of the School of Architecture is the body responsible for the development of quality processes and collects information of the development of the program (academic indicators, results, surveys, complaint and suggestion box, etc.). In coordination with the program’s Academic Committee, a report on the analysis on the degree results is produced annually; it incorporates and reviews indicators, results, and satisfaction surveys in order to establish strengths, weaknesses, and improvement proposals.
