Health Care | Other Insurance Coverage

For those health issues not covered by the standard Student Insurance, including common diseases, and for students not covered by the Student Insurance, the following procedure should be followed:

A) If the student is from one of the following countries, he or she may receive free health care from the Navarran Health Service (in public hospital and health centers).

  1. Countries of the European Economic Area: Germany, Belgium, Denmark (except Greenland), France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom (including Gibraltar), Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Malta.

    The student must visit the center with the European Health Card in his or her possession, or else with documentation that demonstrates the right to obtain public health care in his or her country of origin.

  2. Countries with which Spain maintains a bilateral agreement: Andorra, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Morocco and Tunisia.

    The student must demonstrate documentation from the health ministry or other health care organism in his or her country of origin, which demonstrates the right to obtain public health care in that country.

B) If the student comes from a country which is not listed in section A, or else does not have the right to public health care in his or her country of origin:

  1. Navarran Health Service (public hospitals and health centers): the student may apply for coverage through the public health service, in accordance with Decreto Foral 640/96, provided that the student has been civilly registered in a Navarran city (empadronado) for at least a year. Applications must be presented in the Individual Health Card Office (Plaza de la Paz, s/n, 4ª planta / 31002 Pamplona) with the following documentation:
     
    -    Photocopy of the student's Alien Resident Card (N.I.E.), passport or National Identity Card (DNI)
    -    Certificate of civil registration (empadronamiento) showing length of residence (a minimum of one year is required).
    -    Certificate showing the previous year's income, indicating income sources (scholarship, family aid, etc.).
    -    application for Individual Health Services Card (Tarjeta Individual Sanitaria).
    -    application for recognition within the public health care system, vía D.F.640/96.

    Via this insurance option, the student will have the right to obtain health care within the Autonomous Community of Navarra for a year. Once this time period has passed, the student may apply for renewal. The Navarran Health Care System requires that the student contribute a monthly amount which is calculated based upon declared income.

  2. Private and optional insurance:
  • Travel Insurance: Available from Mapfre, this insurance policy provides coverage for medical costs in Spain up to a limit of 3,000, 6,000 or 60,000 euros.  More information at: www.unav.es/segurodeviaje or at the Student Aid Office (Central Building).
  • Hospitalization and Health Insurance (ACUNSA): Provides coverage for medical at the University of Navarra Hospital in two distinct programs: hospitalization or hospitalization plus doctor visits; This latter program is only available for students under 35 years of age. Contact: www.acunsa.es.
