ACTIVITIES & PROJECTS
Kino Awards
The Kino Awards were inaugurated by the Department of
Film, Television and Digital Media in 1996 (the same year
in which the first class of Film, TV & Radio obtains
its degree) to recognize the creative, artistic and technical
achievements of students in the short films produced as
part of their final-year projects.
“Kino” is an appropriate name for these awards:
in Spanish, the word sounds like a first name or familiar
title (like the Oscars, the Goyas, the Cesars, etc.); in
other languages, such as German and Russian, “kino” means
cinema.
Like other, similar award competitions, the Kino Awards
are granted in 12 creative, artistic and technical categories:
Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Script, Best Music,
Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best
Supporting Actor, Best Photography, Best Editing, Best
Production Design and Best Sound.
The Honorary Kino Award is a special prize granted to former
students of the School of Communication who have begun to
establish their reputation in the cinema and/or television
industries. (It is not awarded every year.) Unlike other
honorary awards, which pay tribute to a life’s work
or a celebrated reputation, the Honorary Kino Award acknowledges
promise and potential for the future.
