Obituary for Professor Terence H. McLaughlin
Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of London Institute of Education

There must be few in the international community philosophy of education who have not by now heard of –and been touched by– the recent sudden death of Professor Terry McLaughlin.
Terry passed away in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge in the early afternoon of Friday, 31 March 2006, shortly before the opening of the annual Oxford conference of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain in which he had always played – academically, professionally and socially– a central part. As a former member of the University of Cambridge Department of Education and a Fellow of St Edmunds College for 25 years, Terry had only fairly recently been appointed to the highly prestigious Chair of Philosophy of Education at the University of London Institute of Education (a position previously occupied by such distinguished British educational academics as Louis Arnaud Reid, Richard Peters and John White).
Terry McLaughlin’s academic and professional achievements were many and distinguished and it would be impossible to list all of them here. As an accomplished analytical philosopher, he published regularly in such leading professional journals as Journal of Philosophy of Education, Journal of Moral Education and Educational Philosophy and Theory (on many of the editorial boards of which, along with the present one, he served), and he was co-editor of a number of important essay collections on educational philosophy, perhaps especially (with Mark Halstead) Education in Morality (Routledge 1999). He was also a Chair of the Philosophy of Education of Great Britain and of the Steering Committee of the International Network of Philosophers of Education. He lectured internationally and held visiting positions in the USA, Norway, Spain, Australia and Lithuania. Terry was interested in a wide range of issues and topics mainly concerned with normative issues concerning the prospects of moral, social, religious, spiritual and citizenship education in liberal-democratic contexts of (state and other) schooling. However, as a devout Roman Catholic, Terry was especially committed to positive promotion of the cause of Catholic education in particular, but also religious education in general. In this connection, I could not conclude this short obituary without some personal recollection of Terry McLaughlin. In view of our common interests it is hardly surprising that we were drawn together at a fairly early stage. However, it may be of particular present interest that the first of my many close collaborations with Terry took the form of our participation –along with Professor John Haldane of University of St Andrews and Professor Richard Pring of the University of Oxford– in a conference on philosophy, religion and Catholicism held in the University of Navarra in 1994 (resulting in the publication of a jointauthored paper on Maritain in the British Journal of Educational Studies in 1995). This was the first of many occasions on which I was to enjoy the company of a deeply warm, gracious, large-spirited and enormously good-humoured (as well as wonderfully humorous) person, who did not merely profess but actually live his deep religious faith. My experience of Terry was everyone’s experience of him: he was loved and admired by all who met him and his death on the eve of the Oxford conference, to which his presence was always so central, has left an entire community with a sense of irreplaceable loss. It is an enormous personal privilege to have known Professor Terry McLaughlin and to have had his friendship. But he will be sorely missed by all.
